Default RAIN kills FE

On this current 200 mile trip the last half of it where I normally can get in the 42 mpg range I have been stuck at 38 mpg. It's been raining steady and there is a thin layer of water on the road. On the slower city streets I can't drive under E mode much as the rain on the road really offers a lot of resistance to the tires.

I've even tried some of those "crazy" hypermiler" tips to no avail

Yep you are hosed (PUN).....

Same result has been repeatedly reported on this board in the past. Seems odd but 'tis true.

OMG, considering I live in Portland, I'm definitely hosed!!

Anyone want a very slightly used TCH? (jk)

What's so odd about the fuel economy going down when the humidity goes up?

More moisture in the air means less dense air for the engine to breath.. Wait until a cold winter day when there's no snow to mush through.. Your engine will REALLY love it and if you're lucky enough to get a non-oxygenated fuel, your mileage will increase..

Now you Phoenix folks - well, yeah - you're hozed...

.

About the only thing you can do about rain is try to keep your wheels rolling through the part of your lane that has the least water on it. Driving in the tracks of the vehicles ahead can help, as can staying a bit to the right on the higher pavement. (Roads tend to sink where they are constantly pounded by tires, leaving high spots on the sides and in the middle.) Still, that will only get you so much.

I had the same issue yesterday and that thought came to my mind.

Besides the rolling resistance due to water on the road, you will also have the drag coeficient changed from .27 to .35 or .40 and possibly even higher.

When it was raining here we had to have the defogger on a lot, so that probably contributed to a reduction in FE.

WVGasGuy, why is your TCH signature showing 0mpg?

38 is still pretty good fo a car the size of ours.

Don't worry - be happy!
