You don't find large items hit it?

The board with the LED's is thin, and the mounting location is higher than the bottom edge of the lip of the trunk. I doubt if even a large suitcase would be tall enough to hit it. Of course, I rarely actually use my trunk for much more than the spare tire and the emergency kit, and maybe a small package. Big things belong in the pickup truck, not in the trunk.
BTW -- I keep an emergency kit in each vehicle, including this one. The kit is a canvass bag with a zipper closure, the type they sell as a tool bag. In it is: a wind-up LED flash light, a few emergency flairs, a fluorescent orange poncho, a fluorescent orange mesh vest, a pair of work gloves, a tire-plug kit, a small air compressor, a pair of jumper cables, and just a few hand tools. The entire kit is only about 18" long, 12" wide, and maybe 12" tall. So it's not going to hit anything at the top of the compartment.
Those wind-up LED flash lights are great -- there is no battery to be dead when you need to use it.
I haven't found a good place yet to keep the fire extinguisher. In previous cars, I have secured it in the rear passenger-side foot well, so that I could reach from the drivers seat. (Fire extinguishers need to be accessible in a hurry, so it doesn't do much good to keep them in the trunk. I actually used one a few years ago, when someone else's car caught fire and I happened to be there.) I will probably end up putting it in the rear foot well on this car, too. But reaching back there in this car is quite a stretch. Maybe I'm just getting old.
