Valve pinging
Yesterday I was going over a small hill so I pressed the gas a bit (enough to go up the hill) and the engine was pinging. This reminded me of my former car when I ran regular instead of middle grade.
Has anyone else experienced this, or do I have a bad tank of gas?
It has no-name brand (Crown) gas in it right now. I have a hair under 3K miles on the car.

Re: Valve pinging
I haven't experienced any pings or knocking using Shell Gas.
Here's a link to Top Tier Gasoline site which cites benefits of using brands which adhere to its principles - unsure of affiliation so be aware this is probably biased.

Try Shell or another National Brand next fill-up, still using 87...

I have read no posts in this forum, except yours, complaining of pinging. And in 11 months I have not experienced any pinging in temps from 10 degrees Fahrenheit up to 100 degrees outside temperature using 87 octane gas.

Re: Valve pinging
No pinging, ever. As TKCamry said, it has not been an issue mentioned.

No pinging here even with our 85 octane gas.

Just curious. Are you sure it is pinging and not maybe some valve clattering. You might want to check your oil just to make sure it isn't low for some reason.

Re: Valve pinging
Abward,
I can't imagine a situation were this pinging would be considered normal. I would report this to your dealer and take them for a drive if you can duplicate the noise. Even if you had "bad" fuel, the computer should be able to retard the spark enough to stop pre-detonation. By identifing the possible problem, you may save a big bill later on.

Re: Valve pinging
The owner's manual states that pinging can occur and doesn't do damage. Still I would try different gas.

Re: Valve pinging
No problems here and I have a lot of elevation changes around here. I have almost 3K miles and I've used nothing but Shell...
