Well, after a few weeks of driving while thinking of the problems as an "engine flameout"... the symptoms have not resurfaced! I've toned down my downshifting so that I don't drop from high rpms to idle. No more weird lights coming on, nothing.

...because you'll see me passing everybody at 90 mph going up mountains.
