My wife is normally the slower (and the more risk averse driver) but I normally get 2-3 mpg better mileage per tankful in the same car and similar drives. Since we've had the HCHII, she's certainly improved and become more interested in improving mileage. Nevertheless, 4 tanks later, I still get to improve the avg about 0.2-0.4 mpg in a 25-30 mile drive even on a 400-500 miles tank.

I just posted my 4th tank. My mpg continues to rise with the temperatures and my ability to drive the HCH2 efficiently. The car has taught me alot just by paying attention to the IMPG display. My last tank was up to 59mpg. I will probably settle in around this level but will hope for better in the coming weeks.
I find it is really hard to keep the mpg up in slow moving traffic as the car seems to lose momentum. Low speed P&G seems to work at maintaining overall mpg, but once you get into bumper to bumper/stop & go there is precious little one can do. Thankfully for me that is rarely an issue.
Good luck, everyone!

.

Scott

I find that during slow moving traffic on the freeways I can get a really high MPG.

I just helped the cause. It is a record tank for me (640.3 miles/10.314 gal = 62.1 mpg). I would have liked to try for 700 miles, but the fuel gauge dropped to no bars. Maybe I will try for 700 later. Basically, I just focused on FE the entire tank. I did not get on a freeway and I used the AC for less than 100 miles on the tank. In my previous tanks, I occasionally accellerated hard and I also drove as fast as 95mph.

On the way home from the gas station (slight decline 100-200ft.) I had plenty of battery so I was able to use EV-mode quite a bit. I had the FE up to ~135mpg. By the time I got home I was at 119.2 miles after 3.7 miles. I know the round trip is what is important, but it was still nice to see those high numbers.

Update for historical information only:

July 31 2006

Gen 2 Civic is at 46.8/46.6 Median/Mean in the database.

Kite quoted 46.6 back on June 17, 2006 so it looks like you guys have picked up 2 tenths over summer so far....Assuming Kite quoted Median last month.....

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for HCHII owners, but I'm pretty sure I quoted the mean.

I was blaming my wife for low mileage as well. Our first tank, I did not get below 48mpg and mostly over 53 mpg on all my trips. My wife would come back from work with 39-40mpg. I thought it was strictly her driving until the other day when I drove the car in very hot weather with the A/C on Auto 75. To my surprise, the A/C must have been struggling and I could not get the Hybrid Batteries above 4-5 bars no matter what I did. Consequently it seemed like the batteries did not assist very much on starts from a light and I had forced regen most of the time. Needless to say I ended up with only 38 mpg at the end of a 8 mile short drive around town. Maybe a longer drive with some highway would have fixed the issue somewhat, but I am beginning to see how my wife may be "stuck" in this mode with 26 lights on the way to work on a 22 mile trip. She also always uses the A/C and it is going to be nearly 100 all week. Is this normal? We live in Baltimore, so we have summertime oxygenated gas now with E10 instead of MTBE now as well.
