Default My best tank ever 71.65 MPG

http://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/m.../car/1900.html

Well it's over.
I was going to shoot for a record for miles-per-tank too, but I wimped out.
I didn't want to take a chance harming my fuel pump so I filled up this morning.
I think that I still had more than a gallon left.

I went 740.6 miles on 10.337 gallons, for 71.65 MPG.

Here are the conditions for this tank:

No modifications to car, 100% stock
No engine block heaters
No blocking of radiator intake
No topping off of gas tank - I have always stopped at the first click
No FAS (turning off car when going downhill)
No Lean Burn
No EV Mode
No drafting (tailgating semi trucks)
No driving with load
No looking at tachometer to guide my acceleration
No air conditioner used
No rain and negligible wind
No passengers
No pushing or being towed either.

90% of miles are with cruise control ON and set at 48 MPH for my flat 17-mile commute

Tire pressure = 42 PSI
Average temp is about 75 degrees
My windows are always up
If it is hot I use the fan and/or take my shirt and shoes off

I accelerate like a old snail on morphine that's in no hurry at all to get to the dentist for a root canal
I rarely used brakes because I leave a ton of room in front of me

I'm tired of going 48 MPH, maximum speed, so I'm sure I will never get a better tank average than this
I'll return to 53 MPH max now

Also we are entering the hottest months of the year and I'll be tempted to use a little AC

Best tank 71.65 MPG.

Before this car I spent two years learning hypermiling on my 2004 HCH1.

That is some tank. Keep up the good driving, it gives us something to shot for! You guys keep this up and Honda may pass the 48mpg that Prius has at present. H

Great work Kenny - thanks for the tips on what you did (an didnt) do to get there!

what do you check while you are accelerating - assist bars, a scan gage reading, certain amount of time to get to speed?

Just my rear view mirror.

If there are people behind me I'll pull into the next lane as soon as it clears.
I try to be considerate.

If there is nobody behind me I can take forever to get up to speed.

Kenny,
Congratulations... that's very impressive! I'd be thrilled to hit 60 for a tank... but I'm just not willing to go down in speed THAT much. My family already makes fun of me for driving like a "grandpa"... and that's doing 60 mph much of the time. I've had 29 tanks in a row at 50+ mpg, so that works for me.

Question for you... when you say you accelerate like a slug, just how slow is that? On level ground, how long does it take for you to get up to 40 mph?

.

Yeah, no family members will drive in my car either.
It is kind of embarassing.

Gosh, I honestly don't know how long it would take me to get up to 40 on a flat road with nobody behind me. (Probably years. Hahaha)
Maybe I'll test it.

Edit: I've been doing some searches and I do not think the HCH II has lean burn.
