Default Safe wattage from cig. lighter socket

How many watts will the cigarette lighter socket safely supply? I'm wanting to connect an AC inverter with a 120 watt device connected.

Thanks!

That is two different terms.

Your lighter will supply enough amps to run an inverter. The inverter is converting volts to watts.

You will be okay, unless it is one of those monster inverters...

pagemap, could you check the specifications on the inverter itself? If you have a 120W device connected to the inverter, then you have to account for the combined load of the device plus the load imposed by the inverter.

Each of the two power sockets will accommodate at most 180 watts. Any more than this and the circuit for that socket will fail.

Cheers;

Check the Current Rating of your Invertor. The unit in Ampere (A). If it is equal or lower than the cig lighter socket ampere rating, then it is ok. there should be a fuse for the cig. socket. worst case, the fuse will be fused.

If you connect it and it is too many watts, it will not work. Worst case, your fuse will be blown

Actually, the invertor converts DC to a modified sine-wave AC. Both AC and DC have watt ratings, as well as amp ratings (and volt ratings). If you have 2 of the figures, you can extrapolate the 3rd.
