Hybrid deals are out there.... you just have to be patient and maybe look for a car with higher mileage
I got my 2006 civic hybrid with 90,000 miles for less than the cost of a 2007 honda fit.

4/27/08 612.1 miles @ 62.1 MPG with 110,000 miles on the Civic
