It's amusing, but all it really does for me is highlight how irresponsibly most folks spend money in the first place. The bottom 10% or so of car owners are probably right there on the edge of being able to afford a car at all, but for everyone else, they're doing things like spending 2-3 times as much on lunches and dinners instead of making their own sack lunch / home cooked dinner, and numerous other lifestyle changes you can make that barely sacrifice anything at all and add up to big savings over the course of a year.

I agree. I for one spend between $10 and $20 a DAY on lunches. I budget myself $200 a month for lunch. I could save a ton of money if I brown bagged. Maybe I should start thinking about that.

I'm way past that thought Tom.....Let me tell you a sick little story.....

My mom reminded me earlier this month that even as far back as 1990, I would prepare a huge batch of food on Sunday and eat that food at work for lunch all the following week. For example, a huge pot of spaghetti with meat sauce, or a beef stew, or a pot of chili, or a batch of Filipino style Chicken Adobo. Then each day, I would pack up a lunch-sized portion and take that to work and eat that. That made my lunch cost come in at usually two to three dollars per lunch, max.

For people who have access to some kind of food preparation area and a microwave and a fridge at work, this solution can save you HUNDREDS of dollars a year. I do and I have continued this behavior for about 15 years now. I don't do this EVERY week, but at least 15-20 weeks in the year I do the heaping big cheap lunch thing.

We also have "roach coaches" who stop here and I can get a hot plate of food for $3.75 every day if I wanted to, so that extrapolates to about $20 a week when spread over a year. I also found a heaping good Picante Ramen at Wal-Mart for 67 cents, and I have been eating that for lunch sometimes too. It just all depends on how picky and how frugal you want to be.

So for certain jobs and certain scenarios, lunch money can be cut back to a minimum with just a little planning and effort. And I, as the ANAL person I am, take full advantage !!

Second wife has degree in Home Ec. Thank god her parents paid for that 4 year degree.

My wife can do more with a dollar than I can with a hundred of them. As a result. Brown bad for lunch. Great home cooked dinners. Only have to buy washers and dryers. Never use them. OOO and a sewing machine is a must for her. Plus she works!!! Now if I could just keep her foot from pushing the gas pedal to the carpet all the time.

But really, Im not a poor man by anymeans. But I have no idea how folks can afford to eat out 3 meals a day, muchless 2. Eating at home and bagging lunch saws us tons of money. And Im thankful for it.

My father taught me to sew when I was a teenager. VERY useful skill. Right up there with basic plumbing and handyman around-the-house work.

Early experience taught me I do not have a surgeon's hands, but I still get a kick out of knots. It borders on an intellectual exercise, like origami.
