Default The importance of following instructions

Especially when they pertain to the possibility of blowing you up!

When the sign reads, "do not sit in vehicle while fueling up," one should tend to follow this. Especially since getting in and out of a vehicle (especially when wearing a sweater!) can build up static electricity.

Yeah, airplanes will blow up if they aren't electrically grounded before refueling because of all that static electricity that builds up from the friction of the air in flight. You don't get any second chances like she did!

If that happened with an empty tank (full of vapour) it could have fully exploded. Full tanks are safer in that the liquid doesn't ignite. I was amazed to find out that welding repairs to gas tanks are done with a completely full tank to prevent explosions!

I really think my first instinct would be "RUN" rather than "fiddle with flaming gas pump" - she lucked out.

i thought you were supposed to leave the nozel in the tank if something like that happened... so you don't get a flame thrower sort of thing going on.

Wow. Not to point fingers or anything, but it seems that women do things like that far more often than men. I've personally seen women smoke while fueling, run their car while fueling, and get in and out of their cars like that. Always makes me a little nervous. I asked the woman who was running her car while fueling to turn her engine off, and she complied, and apologized, but still...
