It is something of a given that the war in Iraq is considered ill-advised outside of the repubican party, but that is different than saying the US was duped into war by a white-house spun web of deceipt.

I tend to think that the repubican party, out of self-preservation, will look to fry a couple of scapegoats. But if they lose majority power in congress in the upcoming elections, presidential impeachment is in the offing.

I think libby will probably be the scapegoat you mention. As for impeachment I don't think it will happen.

As far as I know Bush never lied under oath about why we went to war. And as people say here at work. Just because Bush said it and it wasn't true, it doesn't mean he lied, If he believed it to be true at the time. Its convoluded logic but it would keep him from being impeached.

Yes, the Libby thing is separate from the war issue, but the Dems want to make it one in the same. Good luck with that.

The revealing of Wilson's wife as CIA was not illegal because she had not been undercover in the timeframe before the revealing (something like 3 or 4 years according to the law involved) so there will be no conviction for THAT. Maybe for lying to the Grand Jury, but that's it.

huh? I guess I don't keep up with government / politics. It is all too big and spends too much and sticks it nose in my life too much (Republican, Democrat or otherwise). I try not to stick my nose in their business either.

How drastically will my life change if some mundane policy changes? Will my family not love me? Will my friends turn against me? Will my belief in God change? Probably not, I focus on the important things in life and not scandals 1000's of miles away.

Didn't something like 17 members of Clinton's administration get put in jail!? I can't imagine that anyone from Bush's administration getting charged or convicted of anything would matter. It's never mattered in any previous administration.

Its all politics. Both sides hate each other and will do what ever it takes to discredit or harm the other side. The two party system is flawed in that way.

Perhaps you are thinking of the (up to now) repubican icon of abuse of power, Nixon ? Have you ever noticed how the mafia operates ?

Senior operatives in the organization follow the orders of the head guy, and if they are caught say they were acting independently. The head guy is always covered, and operates under the guise of 'plausible deniabililty'.

This sort of ruse may or may not work for bush, because indictment does not have the same legal demands of proof that e.g. a jail conviction would require. Gross mishandling of the public trust would suffice. Would compromising CIA agents, and lying about Iraq military potential and threat that leads to war pass the bar ? In a charge of indictment, an expectation that bush is RESPONSIBLE for the actions of his administration is reasonable. In that frame of reference, it will be irrelevant whether it was bush doing the lying, or one of his cabinet.

Exposing Wilson's wife is not what Libby is in trouble for. He's in trouble for lying to the grand jury about when and where he knew or said things about knowing who Wilson's wife was. He was operating around classified information at the time, and he just got turned around in his time frames and what he said and to whom. His job was to protect classified information too, something that the Dems don't seem to understand.

And they were going after Wilson because our government has an office that was tasked with keeping anti-war stuff minimized, so as to not negatively affect the morale of the troops, and Wilson was talking all crazy about some mystery trip he supposedly got sent on.
