Heading from Phoenix to Las Vegas in the morning. Going to go up through the Joshua Tree Forest. (Route 93?) For those that aren't familiar, it's just a 75 mph road through nowhere. Just lush desert landscaping. Poor FE is going to suffer! Especially if there's traffic on the Hoover Dam.

I drove that route-Las Vegas to Kingman-about 5 years back;folks drove at very high speed(about 80+) considering it wasn't- an interstate.
The best thing I saw in Las Vegas was Las Vegas in my rear view mirror.Of course,it was early August,and very hot-115+,so maybe that colored my impression.Since you are from Phoenix,it will feel just like home.Luck,Charlie
PS" It isn't the heat,it is the humidity" is BS when it is 110+.I live in New Orleans-about 85 today and 95 all summer-but Las Vegas,Phoenix,Tuscon are much "hotter" feeling in the summer-Hell on earth hot with the heat radiating onto you from all directions!

When I first moved here Aug '02, I got in at around 6pm. Of course, it was naturally hot. Somewhere around 115 degrees. I went straight from my A/C'd truck into the A/C'd hotel. At around 10pm, I'm thinking it's a good time to go out and unload my luggage as it's probably cooled down a lot by then. When I opened the door to the outside, it felt as if I had opened an oven door! A wall of heat just hit me. I've since gotten used to it. But it's still hot in the summer.

i went to vegas over the summer a few years ago and i didn't like it either. it was so hot. i don't think it was humid... i remember it being really dry. maybe it's just me being from florida, but i think dry heat is worse... i don't know. walking anywhere was terrible, but driving wasn't great either. we had a mustang convertible with leather seats, so hot to sit on.

my favorite part was the swimming pool at our hotel, it had a water slide, weeee!

I just got back from Vegas. Awesome trip!! Love to visit; would hate to live there.

On the way up, took the direct route. Something like 280 miles one way. Mostly 5 to 10 mph over the limit. Used cruise control most of the time. Lots of elevation changes from 1000 and 5000 feet. Then did about 110 city miles in and around Las Vegas all weekend. Lots of traffic! FE just kept going down and down. Averaged 30 mpg overall for the tank.

On the way back home, went the long way! Added about 80 miles to the trip. There were fewer elevation changes and far less traffic. Again, 5 to 10 mph over the limits. Used cruise mostly. Averaged 35 by hand calculations. 37.5 on the FCD.

Somewhere on I-10, coming out of CA, between Quartzite and Phoenix, I was doing 70 mph and got buzzed by a Prius probably going close to 100 mph!! Anybody on this forum?

For those that want to know more specifics: Tires were set to 32 psi at 80 degrees and 1100 feet altitude. Chevron 87 octane fuel. No hypermiler techniques, with the exception of smooth starts and stops. Car loaded down with two average suitcases and two adults. Car is at 3,363 miles now. I can't think of anything else that you info junkies would want to know.
