Default Codes on all 4 coils with no end in sight

Hello All,
I have been troubleshooting this thing for a while and it is really kicking me down. It is a 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid. The ICE will start but idles rough for about 15 seconds, does not respond to throttle commands then shuts down. This issue came out of no where as everything was running fine one day then the next morning it refused to do more than idle for 15 seconds. My wife drove it last but did not notice anything wrong. I pulled codes which lit up all 4 coils (see below). I use Torque and a blue tooth reader but Torque tells me that it "cannot read all PIDs".

I changed all 4 plugs with no luck, all for coils for brand new OEM coils with no luck and sent the ECU off for servicing and it came back with no defects noted. I feel like a sensor is off somewhere but my scanner wont read it. I am going to have to go back to basics for troubleshooting but that is a little tough since the computer wont let me run the engine. I think the MAF sensor is good as well. I will check with Torque today to see if there is an update to make sure I am getting a full scan.

Has anyone ever seen anything like this?

Thank you in advance,

Travis

First of all: Save yourself a lot of headaches and lost time. Ditch Torque. Get a Windows 2000 and up LAPTOP and an OBDLink EX USB adaptor and run the extended license version of FORScan (you can get 2 month usage of the extended license for free.)

It will communicate with all the modules, everything in the network, will show you all DTCs, and give you a usable diagnostic interface for testing and troubleshooting purposes. Everything else is fumbling around in the dark.

https://forscan.org/home.html

https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-ex/

Then find all the codes and report them. After you get this fixed, FORScan will also let you rebalance the HV battery on your car, which extends its life. As far as I know, it is the *only* aftermarket software with that functionality. I just did it on my '10.

Awesome Alex, Thank you. I have heard of forscan before. Once it is not 2000000 degrees outside I will get cracking on this.

You're welcome. You'll find it is better with the laptop version and they recommend several different adaptors but I use the tried-and-true "wired" OBDLink EX. Plug it in and it just works. And you can "see" the whole car, you can run half a dozen "oscilloscope" readouts in real-time, it's just pro-level stuff for poor-man's money. It is Russian software so if you pay for the Extended License (only $10 a year) use PAYPAL.

Just ordered the OBDLink EX because trying to connect to bluetooth while troubleshooting vehicle problems is frustrating. Thanks again for all the help. If all goes well I will post the info and or hopefully a solution. I have not been able to find anyone else with this issue but I am sure it is out there.

All 4 coils sounds like none of them are getting power. Check where their power comes from: http://www.nicksmustangranch.com/Ser...Escape_Hybrid/

Thank you, looking at this now. I may back probe the coils soon and the only thing left in the system would be wiring and or a bad ground somewhere.

I found all the codes and I can post a screen shot or whatever works. There was only another 2 codes. 1 of 2 was saying the PCM has not yet fully cycled (I would expect so since the car does not run more than 15 seconds at a time) and 2 of 2 was a hybrid code. I tried scoping the coils with no luck. Not sure what else I should be doing on forscan but I will play with it as much as I can in this extreme heat outside right now.

Do post a screenshot and also watch this video. This is a primary ignition problem and it can be tracked down. In fact in this video he's doing the troubleshooting on a Ford Escape engine (probably his own, I think an '09 or an '11, from about 7 years back) - just not a Hybrid. As he says, you have to figure out/rule out whether it is the PCM itself. If it's not the wires or the coils and a few other things check out, it's the PCM (ugh).

If you turn the key to "START" - even if the engine gets turned off by the computer - it SHOULD restart the engine if you push the throttle pedal to the floor. At least it does on my '10. Maybe to take measurements you would need a helper to hold the pedal down.
