Default FEH Nav: Routes that span multiple disks...

I've had my 2007 FEH for a couple of months now, and while I have to admit the NAV system isn't as good as some I've used in the past, it's far from the worst. I decided to get it for the Hybrid Displays, and the NAV functions are adequate.

One thing that bugs me is the spotty documentation, though. I haven't yet figured out how to plan a long-distance route that spans multiple disks. I managed to do it - ONCE. Since then, I get complaints about "unavailable" data, and no amount of disk swapping seems to do the trick.

Anybody know how this is supposed to work?

cheers...

Wow, what a timely question! I have been trying to do this too.

I was imaging that at some point during my trip, the Nav system will ask me to switch disks. With that, I would just engage the cruse control, search thru my storage/glove box, find the pack of disks, eject the old disk, carefully store it away into the correct sleeve, locate the new disk, carefully take it out, and insert it into the Nav system.

At that stage, I can finally release the cruise control and start watching the road again.

Well, seriously, what I have found out so far, is that I put in the destination disk, and plan my route. It appears that the disks have the basic (ie, major highways) for adjacent areas. So, even though my route starts in PA, I can put in the NY-East disk, and it seems to still know the major PA highways.

But you are so right. A little instruction on how to do this would have been so nice.

I took a trip from MI to SC. I used the SC disk to start out with to input the destination, then went back to the MI disk before I started. As I drove, it gave me step by step directions. You can go from start to the final state with that one disk, but you can swap at any time, which I did when I crossed onto the next disk, mostly because I could, and it made some stops easier. You need the destination disk to get all your street level maps off the expressway to get there, but by and large, you can get by with 2 disks, one for your destination, one for where you are, regardless of how long the trip is, as all the disks have all the North American expressways on them; its the street level stuff that varies by disk.
