MECS Pump Replacement

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
I have a 2005 FEH that does not (yet?) have any issue(s) related to the MECS pump or blend door. These photos provide instruction on how to change out the MECS pump:

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
That is going to cost me 600$? - WTF! GRRRR
I contacted the NV company, they said they have had a dramatic increase in orders in the last few months and unfortunately do not have any pumps left simply because the company manufacturing the replacements - have them on back order!
Interesting FORD - how is this not a serious problem if you can't keep up with demands? RECALL IT **** IT!
Mom - I have not taken it to the dealer to confirm this is the issue, however, I've read enough online to have enough evidence point me in the right direction.
I only have an over heating problem when my electric motor has the opportunity to run. If I put the AC or Heat on MAX (red portions of the thermostat) forcing the combustion engine to run constantly, My engine does not - I repeat does not over heat.
The first few times my car shut down on me, it gave me no warning what so ever. In fact Ford had no idea what was causing the issue. Only the last two times did we get a warning 'High MOTOR Temperature' moments before it shut down on us.
According to the owners manual there is a difference between 'High Motor Temperature' and 'High Engine Temperature' Motor = Electric motor. Engine = Combustion Engine.
I'm calling Ford to cancel my replacement. The instructions seem way to easy for it to cost 600$ to replace!
Thanks for you help!

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
Note: Unless you put the front end up on jack stands you'll find it awkward to do as the working clearance is tight. Can be done on the ground, that's how I did it summer of 09 as initially posted.
Why your mechanics should be afraid of the electric motor is beyond me, but then this shows their ignorance of the car.
While it won't be a big deal if you watch the coolant level in the MECSystem after completion, but you should vent the top of the transaxle. Probably easier to disconnect the big wiring plug that's somewhat in the way. Note the rubber o-ring on this vent plug, tighten it down but don't crush it.

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
Sigh, well it's been a while since I've had anything to post here, but I'm at 58k miles, and lo and behold this evening I got the "High Motor Temperature" message and the over temp idiot light. Fortunately I was on a neighborhood street so I just pulled over and waited for things to cool down then drove straight home.
It sounds like this is a no brainer, replace the pump and be done with it. I'll try to pull the codes of course to verify. I see it's been about a year since any posts on this subject, I presume anyone who has hit this problem has been taken care of by replacing the pump?

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
I just had mine replaced today. The engine quit on me a couple of nights ago. Had the panel light come on that indicateds "Safety Alert". Pulled over turned everything off and started right back up. Drove another 10 miles and same thing over again. Two days later drove 35 miles back to my motorhome. Stopped by the Ford Dealer today and they found the problem and replaced it. I have 86,000 miles on my 07 2 wheel drive FEH. It cost me $50.00 deductible. Have an extended service contract that covered it. I believe it's the Ford Premium Plan.

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
Well we have not had another failure but I ordered the pump from Silver State Ford and will be doing the replacement myself probably next weekend. They had the pump kit in stock, btw.

I can't find the pump on their website catalog. Do you recall what the price was? Let us know how the replacement goes.

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
Looks like it's my turn to replace this pump. FEH shutdown tonight on the freeway, but I managed to make it home with several restarts enroute. This is a dangerous failure to have in traffic as you have to come to a complete stop to do the restart. FEH has 38,707 miles at time of failure.
I' was monitoring the MeT at the time of the shutdown and it read about 150F instead of around 90F (10F above ambient normally). Anyway, the temperature rise happened very quickly and I didn't observe it happening. When I got it in my garage the electric fan on the radiator continued to run at a very high speed, I would assume in an attempt to lower the MeT back to normal.
I'm going to order the pump from Silver State Ford on Monday and replace it myself. Can anyone confirm that this is the correct part?
Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
5M6Z8C419A $281.98 $0.00 $166.09
HYBRID COMPONENTS - Cooling system - Water pump
Water pump, escape, mariner 2005 - 2007

Re: MECS Pump Replacement
You will spend most of your time removing the splash guards and perhaps 15 minutes actually replacing the pump...may as well replace the coolant given the number of miles you have. I was not able to find the Zerex coolant locally but the Ford dealer's price was competetive with Amazon once you include shipping.
Good luck!
