To reset the MPG, make sure that the dashboard display is on the MPG screen and thn press and hold the SET button next to the info button until it resets. You can do this either while you're moving...

but don't the brakes replenish the battery? I would agree that in the absense of energy from the brakes that the engine would be the source but aren't the brakes the source of the energy?
