Re: 10 Best and Worst Cars for Depreciation

Resale value only matters if you want to sell your car. I tend to keep the ones I buy until they give up the ghost.

Re: Cadillac will get hybrid Escalade

"If people would not flock to the trucks so much, they would not be priced so unreasonably."

The profit margin would fall, but because of smaller production runs, the final retail cost would...

Re: Cadillac will get hybrid Escalade

Driving a car with an internal combustion engine isn't environmentally friendly.

I agree that most owners of Escalades have no reason to have such a large vehicle. But the only sensible way to...

Re: Cadillac will get hybrid Escalade

It saves more fuel and pollution to replace an Escalade with a hybrid version than to replace an SRX with a hybrid version.

The only way to get people to choose the smallest vehicle that will do...

Re: Fun with A/C.

It looks like the "demo" car was in a collision and that body work was done but the A/C radiator was overlooked.

Re: Running On Empty

Thanks, Gary. One question/clarification:

You wrote, "Since the battery does not demand A/C operation by starting the ICE..."

I assumed it did start the ICE if it was off and the battery...

Re: Running On Empty

Gary, I'm not saying that you or anyone else has abused their car. I'm really trying to understand how it works. Let me ask my question again:

If the A/C is unavailable (such as from running out...

Re: Running On Empty

When fuel is gone and thus there is no air conditioning to cool the batteries, will a hot battery still provide power to the traction motor?

Re: Fun with A/C.

You had no EV even when the battery had a good charge?

Re: Fun with A/C.

Hmmm. Does loss of A/C cause loss of both EV and charging, or only charging? I understand that the battery will tend to get hot and not be further charged, but will the system even prevent a hot...

Re: Hot climate FEH performance

I'm not so sure. In a very hot climate, one will need to run the air conditioner or have the windows open on the freeway. In a cool climate, one can often have the windows closed and the AC off...

Re: Best for MPG -- Roof rack or Tow Hitch Mounted Rack?

Geek gal, I just went through almost the exact same decision, right down to already having one of those rear strap-on racks.

The only things i can add are these:

The weight of a hitch...

Re: 2008 Dodge Durango to be available as a hybrid

Well, New England is 4WD country, too, and for very good reason. But the point is that 4WD is better than 2WD in the snow.

You know, 4WD doesn't have to mean large and inefficient. It often does,...

Re: 2008 Dodge Durango to be available as a hybrid

4WD is very popular in New England. And when I was in Alaska and the Yukon no one drove 2WD.

Maybe they'll wise up.

You know, this doesn't have to be yet another stupid, polarized discussion....

Re: 2008 Dodge Durango to be available as a hybrid

Actually, my point was that little 2WD econoboxes become astronomical gas hogs when their owners take them out on the roads during snowstorms and the like. I didn't advocate having a 4WD solely for...

Re: Electrocution Hazard

No. The Escape does use a (different) electronic continuously variable transmission from the same Japanese...

Re: 2008 Dodge Durango to be available as a hybrid

I don't disagree at all in the general observation that most large SUVs and trucks are chosen for reasons other than usefulness. And there is a huge waste there. Just don't regard everyone in a large...

Re: 2008 Dodge Durango to be available as a hybrid

I've driven a medium-size SUV or a full-size pickup since about 1980.

If your minivan has a sunroof, you might be able to fill it with a half-ton of gravel or, better yet, horse manure. I used my...

Re: Electrocution Hazard

Peter, Ford designed and built the car and its hybrid system. They got a bunch of patents on it. Any dealer who has a customer come in with a credible report of an electrocution hazard would have a...

Re: Electrocution Hazard

I think you are misunderstanding the issue you posed to Ford. If someone comes in convinced that their new car is going to kill them, Ford can't really give them a remedy, if nothing is wrong....

I think it's certain that Toyota has more technicians available to diagnose a presumed electrical hazard on a hybrid than does Ford. And the availability of mechanics and technicians to work on your...

I'd also be interested. I agree with Ford's response.
