Default Air Conditioning really affect MPG?

I know it was debunked on myth busters but my MPGS are down since its been so hot in these summer months and only thing I can blame is air conditioning. Anyone have any insight?

HCH2 A/C can have a dramatic impact on mpg. Heavy use here in AZ brings 46-50mpg down to 34-38. Best to use in AUTO mode at the highest temp comfortable. I start at 86 and work down if needed.
