Although the Hybrid's can be driven just like any other regular car, there are some
of us who drive in a somewhat different manner to maximize MPG.
Personally I make it a challenge almost every time I drive to get even better
miles per gallon....for the grand prize: a higher tank average.

Sometimes I can't decide what is the most efficient way to climb a hill.
What special technique's do YOU use (if any) and especially climbing a hill?

I ALWAYS drive for better gas mileage. In climbing hills I get as much momentum as possible and then try to maintain decent MPH. I am not one to hold anyone up, but I also don't mind going the speed limit in the slow lane. It also matters the hills. I have only gone to the hills a couple of times. Twice to Jackson averaging around 50 mph(slow curvey roads), and twice to Reno averaging about 65mph (freeway). The way I have been doing it is always using the IMA to keep speed. By that I mean using the IMA then backing off until i need the IMA again. In traveling to Reno from Sacramento, with three stops in traffic, my HCH averaged aprox. 43MPG. In traveling from Reno to Sac. the average was over 62mpg. This is never going more than 5mpg under the speed limit going over the summit.

This week is a good endurance test for my CVT HCH.
My wife & I, along with our 3 kids ages 6-11 are piling into our car and heading
to Charleston, SC from Atlanta which is about 650miles.
My daily commute is 45 miles each way (Twice a day) but this is our first long ride in our new HCH.

We have decided to leave the 2002 Grand Caravan at home, hopefully saving more than tripple the fuel bill.

Actually, so far theyv'e been pretty darn accurate. The Insights have been high and Prius I only has a small sample of 1.

 

I'd like to help the few HCH's that are listed in the database that are only getting in the 30's.
There's even one in there from Georgia.
I can't help but think they're driving pretty hard!

___I am not so sure some of those Civic’s are Hybrid’s? We all have to be very careful when entering in data or it comes up as a misrepresentation and those entering for the first time probably have more errors then normal? Every time I insert a tank, I am always mindful of my own mistakes in the notes or the techniques so as to attempt to keep the format as consistent as possible as well as adding a bit of “insight” (no pun intended ) as to what that tank’s mileage was all about in a sentience or less if something was abnormal about it.

I suppose there's no way to be sure. I'd think it pretty self explanatory when creating a car, but you never know...

 

Maybe they just don't understand how to get good gas mileage. My girlfriend drove my car for a couple of days and she was 18 MPG less than me. I try to get her to go into lean burn, but she doesn't care! She is just happy to be getting 11mpg better than her beemer!!

I'm always hoping to get that 60MPG tank average.
My daily commutes are regularly 58-62MPG so I still have a little way to go.

Took a 3 day trip from Atlanta to Charleston SC in the HCH, left the Caravan home. I figured the Caravan would require 4 tanks for the 700 mile round trip so all 5 of our family piled into our HCH.
I roughly guess about 600-650lb worth of people & cargo.
I only got 54 point something MPG which was a little dissappointing.
But I guess I can't complain though for the roller coaster hills of Greenville SC most of the way to the coast and the full load.
Also I had to compromise speed and MPG, for the family sake.
If we took the Grand Caravan fuel would have been around $130.00.
The round trip used 7/8 of a tank of 13 gallons, so I saved about $115.00 by leaving the Caravan home.

I haven't done any driving tips for quite a while but hope to post some soon.
