Default 2013 Zero Motorcycles lineup goes faster and farther, charges with CHAdeMO

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, USA

Our socks, they are knocked off.

Zero Motorcycles has just revealed its 2013 lineup and we expect that after checking out the changes, you will be as impressed as we are. Featuring significant advancements that make the entire range go faster, farther, and charge quicker, the company's all-electric bikes may have just crossed that line that separates toys from tools.

At first glance, the improvements seem incremental. But, go beyond the seductive aesthetics and look at the specs, you'll realize they are anything but. Within the heart of every bike is a new, Zero-designed motor that beats with twice the potential power of previous machines, receiving life-giving electrons at a much higher voltage from more energy-intensive battery packs. In the top-end S and DS models, this results in a quicker bike with a max speed of 95 miles per hour and a real-world possible range of over 100 miles in the city.

The 2013 models also charge up those bigger batteries faster. If using a 110 or 220 outlet, the fill-up rate is 25 percent quicker than previously, allowing the 11.4-kWh configuration to go from empty to full in 7.9 hours. Add the optional CHAdeMO accessory though, and you can get to 95 percent in an hour while plugged into a DC fast charger. And, if your budget allows for extra batteries, quick swapping is possible in all but the S and DS bikes.

Also new for 2013 is smart phone integration. Along with an accessory to mount your device to the bike, Zero has produced an app for iPhones and Androids that allows you to not only track information from the motorcycle via Bluetooth, but alter performance characteristics as well. How cool is that?

Scroll down and we'll give you a look at each bike, along with a summary of its improvements, followed by the official press release.Continue reading 2013 Zero Motorcycles lineup goes faster and farther, charges with CHAdeMO
