Actually no, I only do the oil changes at the dealer. I do rotation and balance at a trusted tire store that does it every 6,000 miles for one upfront charge of $79.00 for the life of the tires also.

My local Toyota dealer always puts a reminder on the windshield to change the oil again in 2,000 miles...this does not instill confidence that they really know what they are doing.

...they know exactly what they are doing. The sooner and more often they come in, the more business they'll do.

There are enough clueless people out there who simply follow along with whatever they are told by an "authority" that it's worth the dealer's effort to try putting the sticker with 2,000 miles for the next change, or upselling things like recirculating the air in the tires (for even wear on the oxygen molecules).

It's not just the dealers.
Today, when the odometer hit 34,600 miles, the display announced,
"MAINTENANCE REQUIRED..."
The last time I checked, 7 x 5,000 = 35,000.

IIRC, the warning comes about 500 or so miles before it's 'due' and nags in a ever-more-urgent manner, so you'll schedule the service by the time it's REALLY due.

Is that rotation of the O2 molecules left to right or up to down?

You have to reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.

Help me on this one - is that the left hand rule or the right?

If I'm not mistaken (but usually am), the warning appears 5,000 miles after the last reset, not at exact 5,000 mile intervals from the time the car was put into service.
If you did an oil change at 29,600 and they reset the indicator, it should properly announce a warning at 34,600, not 35,000.
I believe this is the appropriate behavior.
Were it the other way, if you get an oil change at 34,600 you would see the warning again at 35,000 miles.

Which begs another question...
Other than the 5,000 miles oil reminder, does the MAINTENANCE REQUIRED indicator light up for any other (not including "check engine" problems) events?
