Default Key not detected, cannot lock with headlights on auto

Hello Guys,

I was hoping someone could help me before I contact the dealership.

I have a 2009 camry hybrid and the smart key is giving me some problems. It works to unlock the car and lock the car. The button on the door handle also works. It also works to start the car. But here comes the issue.

When I have my headlights on auto, and put the car in park and turn it off, the car will not detect my key after I close the door. The button on the door handle nor the key will work to unlock or lock.

However, when I step into the car and then take the headlights off auto and into the off position, everything works fine.

Did anyone ever encounter this problem?

I also just changed the battery on the keys. This same issue happens with both sets of keys.

To reiterate, with the car lights on off, I have no problem. Problem only exists when the lights are on automatic.

Yes, same here, done it several times in the last few days. Then it went away. Gremlins.

so now you can lock with the drl on auto?

Did you ever ask a mechanic/dealer about it?

I simply turn lights to off, press Power button, engine shuts down, I flip switch back to auto. I am mindful about saving battery life, why burn juice for nothing.
I do not talk to mechs and dealers. I am DIY or die type.
