Had already bought a parts car for the transmission and computer, so now I will probably keep parts car for future use.
I checked the service manual. The CVT only holds 5.4qt at overhaul, and I didn't find any way in the manual to drain all the fluid. Did they give you some idea as to how this was done?

EDIT: or did they call it some special process that we could reference if we want to take it to the dealer?

Thanks,

Steve

So at basically 150k miles I need to:

Change plugs,
Change coil packs,
Drain/refill my CVT fluid,
Change the oil,
Check and clean my EGR ports,
Pull my battery
Fully charge my battery,
Almost completely discharge my battery,
Fully charge my battery (again),
Almost completely discharge my battery (again),
Fully recharge my battery one last time
Reinstalling my battery?

Sound right?

  1. Change plugs every 100K, Qty 8, ILFR6J-11K (NGK) OR SKJ20HPR-L11 (DENSO) only, about $14 each. No substitutions.
  2. Change coil packs, with 8 plugs come 8 coils, right on top of the plugs. Hitachi aftermarkets are $45 each from RockAuto. That's $360 in coils. IMHO, replace coils on condition.
  3. Drain/refill my CVT fluid, every other oil change.
  4. Change the oil, 0W-20 synthetic w/filter. Maintenance minder calls for oil filter every other oil change. I do it every time.
  5. Check and clean my EGR ports, yes. This can cause problems.
  6. Triple 12V reset and charge with car
  7. Pull my battery
  8. Fully charge my battery w/grid charger and adequate cooling to peak voltage (24-36 hours).
  9. Discharge battery to < 158V @ 165V.
  10. Re-install pack
  11. Triple 12V reset and use car to charge battery to full.
  12. Remove pack, grid charge to peak voltage (5-8 hours) with adequate cooling.
  13. Re-install pack and go.

No need to do multiple discharges.

What does that mean? Is there a post that describes this process

As for the plugs and coils, I do not know if/when they were last replaced. I guess I can hold off for now or pull a plug and check it.

0. Make sure you have your radio code before 12V disconnect.
1. Disconnect 12V battery for 30 seconds
2. Reconnect 12V battery.
3. Start and idle car until battery shows full charge.
4. Repeat 1-3 a total of 3 times.

The car will charge the battery to what it thinks is 80% full at a high current rate with proper cooling. Doing it 3 times makes sure it's topped off as far as the car is concerned.

Thank you for that explanation, in hindsight it makes perfect sense.

I will order the parts for your charger design on Monday and see if I can't get some good results in a couple weeks time. I figure it will take a week to get the parts and then I am supposed to be gone for a week. It would be nice to be able to try it before my trip, but you cannot have everything

I don't know how they preformed the drain and fill as no customers are allowed in the service area. I was told that they had a pump that could get all the fluid out and I paid for 8 quarts to refill.

Drain and fill (with I hope the 8 quarts I paid for) was $220

Replacing the computer and programming with the salvage yard computer (that cost $82) was another visit was $161.
