Question about the Federal Tax Credit - FFH
 

Does anyone know what the amount of the Federal Tax Credit will be for the Ford Fusion Hybrid? And when will Ford produce their 60,000th Hybrid - - or have they already reached that number?

I'm pretty sure December 31, '08 was the last day to get the full tax credit on a Ford Hybrid. I don't think the IRS has released any amount for the '10 FFH, but what ever the amount, there will be only 50% of the deduction remaining for 6 months. After that, it will be reduced to 25%.

The deduction does not get reduced at the 60,000th unit sold, but at the end of quarter the 60,000th was sold. There was a little over 55,000 units sold as of June '08 and I think the 60,000th was hit in the last quarter of '08.

The IRS has not announced what the amount of the tax credit. According to the IRS, the taxpayer may claim the credit the full calandar quarter *AFTER* the manufacturer sells its 60,000 hybrid (not the quarter it was sold as stated earlier) ( http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/...157632,00.html).

Also according to the IRS, Ford sold 59,150 hybrids as of Sept 30, 2008 (3Q), ( http://www.irs.gov/businesses/corpor...186772,00.html

so we can assume Ford broke 60,000 hybrids 4Q 2008...so the FULL tax credit should be availiable until March 31, 2009(1Q '09)

These assumptions are based upon data on the IRS website...look for the IRS to officially announce the "phaseout date" for Ford credit when the 4Q sales numbers are released--right now you're still full credit, per IRS.

Now...the question is--can you get a FFH before March 31, 2009??

Looks to me you can. Ford is claiming you can order one before March 31, 2009 and still get the full tax credit.

"These Ford Motor Company hybrids, along with the Escape and Mariner hybrid SUVs, are eligible for full tax credits if purchased or ordered before March 31st. After that time, the credits are reduced by 50 percent due to Ford crossing the 60,000-vehicle threshold that begins a scale-down process for tax credits."

Ford has already produced their 60,000th vehicle (that happened in 4Q08), but there's a 1 calendar-quarter grace period on the full tax credit. So anyone who buys any Ford hybrid by Mar 31, 2009 will get to claim full credit (well... as "full" as anyone can claim based on other limits such as the AMT).

But the real catch is that I don't think these cars are available for sale until the end of the first quarter and buyers qualify for the credit based on the date that the car is "put into service" (e.g. sold or leased to a buyer and plated to drive on the road.) I'm not sure anyone will be able to take delivery on one before Ford runs out of their 100% credit.

It would be nice if the federal government would pass an extension so that people still have incentives to buy green cars. $4/gallon gas was an incentive by itself, but now with the economy in the condition that it is and gas under $2 that incentive is gone.

They have, as long as it isn't a Ford, Honda or Toyota... Get a Chevy, Saturn or something else and you get the full tax credit.

According to the IRS numbers I can find, even reduced by 50%, the FFH's remaining tax credit is still more than the Aura and Malibu's full credit.
