Matt,

I ordered the block heater from cheap honda parts and saved $11. Then I had my dealer put it in.

Matt - I thought I would let you see my trips and mpg numbers for comparison. I do a good bit of driving every day with some days as 90% highway, other days as 50% highway, some days in nothing but rain with the defrost. Anyway, here are the numbers from after the first week of owning up to this past weekend. I only included work days though not every day was logged.

  • Highest daily trip miles was 455.0 miles (and 54.6 mpg) on 10/04
  • Highest daily FE was 56.0 mpg (and 139.4 miles) on 10/10
  • Lowest daily trip miles was 37.5 miles (and 49.5 mpg) on 09/05
  • Lowest daily FE was 37.4 mpg (and 95.3 miles) on 08/16
  • Total work miles for the two months from 08/15 - 10/12 is 6352.4 miles at an average of 162.9 miles and 47.5 mpg per day (estimating 30% city/70% highway).
  • The last two weeks were 2,218.4 miles at an average of 246.5 miles and 53.2 mpg per day (estimating 10% city/90% highway)!
So your short trips are great sometimes but they will mask a bad 3-mile trip when the car is cold too. What are your daily totals for miles driven and mpg for that day or week? I drive enough every day to fill up 1.5 times per week so it usually takes others 2-3 weeks to accumulate the same miles that I do in 1 week though I'm interested to see what others are experiencing.

Total miles on the car right now are 11,600 miles after 10.25 weeks with the first oil change at 7,950 miles.

wow darren, you do drive a lot. as you can see, i make mostly short trips (between clients), and i have to account for that mileage to my employer, so i thought i'd keep track of the fe alongside the mileage and document it here in this thread. at this point, i'm using odo "a" for trips btwn clients, and odo "b" for tank totals.
your trend is clearly one of increasing fe over the past two months, which is certainly something i hope to see with mine over time.
i'm not a math guy. do you know how i can convert my trip data to daily and weekly averages?

Fairly easy... Start off with miles and mpg as you have been. Let's say you have the following:

10mi @ 50mpg
20mi @ 45mpg
5mi @ 60mpg (woot for downhill!)
20mi @ 30mpg (what comes down eventually goes back up)

Take each of those segments and divide miles driven by mpg (0.20, 0.44, 0.08, 0.67, respectively) to see how much gas you consumed. Add up the miles and the gas (55 miles, 1.39 gallons), then divide miles per gallons to get your total mpg for the trip (39.57mpg... going uphill is teh suck!)

cool! so from today then, 31mi/.71gal=43.7mpg today.
thanks chris!
