Just seems unwise to risk damage like that.
I do. I've done a number of tanks until the orange low gas light comes on. I found I have 3 gallons left when that light comes on.

I've also found the gas gauge will go a bit below empty. My TCH has 2.5 gallons left at that point. Going 30 miles past 0 miles to empty still leaves over 2 gallons left for me. It is quite nice not to have to worry about running out right at E.

Sorry to revitalize this old, old thread but I'm looking for confirmation.

I've only had one fill-up since I got my TCH a month ago. The displayed "cruising range" remaining was about 60 miles but the car only took 14 gallons.

A few questions:

1. I have never seen the amber "low fuel" light...when does it come on?
2. Please confirm that the car adjusts the displayed "cruising range" with each new tank of gas to reflect actual fuel economy. Is there any driver action required to make this happen? (I'm averaging about 43mpg, but the displayed "cruising range" when I filled up was only 560 miles) How many fill-ups does it take for the "cruising range" to start reflecting actual performance?

Many thanks!

I'd say the low fuel light would have come on pretty soon if you had not fueled up. Probably within 30 miles.

Each time you fill up the cruising range will adjust some. When I first got the car my mileage was about 38 mpg and the cruising range was about 530 - 540 miles. I now have about six tanks with the last few greater than 40 mpg. Now when I fill up the cruising range is over 600 miles.

Look at Nash's avatar. It shows a cruising range in the high 600 mile range.

Thanks.

So there is not a predetermined point when the amber "low fuel" light comes on?

I've actually had times where it would come on for a while, turn off for a while, etc. until it finally turned on and stayed on.

I think it comes on based on fuel left in the tank. Mine seems to come on when I have about 4g left in the tank, which equals 1g left on the fuel gauge (since the reserve is 3g). I figure this because my amber light just about always come on when my cruising range is around 35 miles, which is about what I'm averaging after 8 tanks.
