Solution to the frustrating 08 HiHy 19-inch tire problem

There have been a number of post regarding the unique 245/55/19 tire size of the 08 HiHy. It's so unique that not even Toyota Dealerships stock them and you really only have two options the Toyo Open Country HT, which is the stock tire or the Brigstone Dueller 400 H/L. Both are ridiculously expensive, wear terribly and are rated some of the worst tires made.

But now consumer Reports has taken notice of this issue and have made this less than flatering post on their website and will take this into consideration going forward as they rate the HiHy in the future.

Now to the solution. You can change the size of your tire without buying 17" or 18" rims. The major impact that changing the size of your tire has is your speedometer will be off by a few % points or miles. The difference is based on the new size of the tire and the speed that it rotates. This tire size calculation site can tell you the difference changing your tire will have on your speedometer. Also you may see a difference in gas mileage.

Here are what I have found to be the best size options for the HiHY. NOW, I AM NOT A MECHANIC AND YOU SHOULD DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF THIS CAUSES ANY DAMAGE TO YOUR VEHICHLE.

Stock tire size - 245/55/r19 103s

Optional Tire Sizes
255/50/19 slightly smaller tire by .6inches in dia and .3 inches in sidwall height and only 1.9% diff in speed at 60MPH you will actually be going 58.8.
And over 24 options on Tirerack.com for at this size.

255/55/19 slightly larger tire by .4 inches in dia and .2 in sidewall hieght and slower rotation by 1.5% diff in speed at 60MPH you will actually be going 60.9Mph. And over 10 options on Tirerack.com for this size.

One point Discounttiredirect.com reccommends 255/55/19.

Well I hope this helps.

One more point, if you do decide to go to the 17 Inch rims the tire size is 245/65/17 which from a dimension standpoint, is the exact same size as the 19 inch 245/55/19.

So if you do decide to make the change to the 17 inch wheel you should not see any change in speedometer reading or gas mileage.

Here is another site that actually lists all the tire sizes for your OEM wheel Rim Specs and also does comparisons and will tell you what the acceptable clearances are for the tire size you have chosen.
