Fuel Tank Capacity

The fuel tank specification is 11.9 gallons - yet the most I can ever add is about 9.8 gallons. At that level I received an engine trouble light and the gas engine turned off. Is this a sensor or computer issue? Anyone experience the same thing? I will call the dealer tomorrow. Thanks.

You might check the Prius forum and read the FAQ. The only real problem known is if you overfill the tank, try to put in more than the pump 'cut-off', you can leak gas into the vapor recovery system. That can be a very expensive problem.

So do you run the tank dry and then only get 9.8 gallons in the car?

Let us know what the dealer found out.
The only "normal" situation for the tank to hold just 9.8 gallons would be for those of us who live in a cold winter environment when the flexible tank size decreases.

My understanding is the bladder in the U.S. version is the cause.
