Up to when this picture was taken I had perfect luck with some key lights and the weather.
My luck ran out tonight, it was raining on the way home. The rain by itself hurts the mileage but it also has a second effect that hurt even more. All the lights see phantom cars on the side streets when it is raining (due to glare on the road I assume) so I didn't make ANY lights. I'm still in the eighties but the tank took quite a hit. |

So what's the new technique? Don't you want to share?

Not with you!
Just kidding. Read up on Pulse & Glide. Normally I would only coast downhill or to slow down for a stop or turn, now I'm coasting even on the flat. Instead of averaging 40-45 miles per hour you are coasting down to 30 then pulsing back up to 40-45 so your average is more like 35. It is actually a pain in the butt, but it does work. Check out krousdb's Prius Silk Shorts! |

Pulse and glide is a technique I have been using this tank I am now on, and the last tank. I just didn't have a name for it. But I don't use it on perfect flats, only on slight downhills where my glide can be hundreds of yards. When you pulse, use the accel/resume button on the cruise control to get back up to speed. On the flats, I find 44mph with the cruise control to be best for FE and mpg.

Update
After taking the rain hit last night IMC is at 82.8mpg after 187.2miles. Note that this is all round trips not just a long killer downhill section. Work is about 18 miles form home so each day I put 35.3 miles on the tank. I'm kinda glad to hear that you (RJ) are already using P&G. I use a modified version (basically the same as yours) because of the hills and I'm still working the bugs out. It is hard to believe you do better pulsing in 4th gear than you do lean burning in 5th but it sure seems to be true. |

I'll be filling up Saturday at around the 300 mile mark. It looks like I should be able to hold on to 82.8mpg displayed.
The day after it rained it was cool. That made it nice to drive around with no AC but it hurt the mileage as much as the rain did. It needs to be HOT to get the best mileage. Today was warmer and I'm solid on 82.8 where yesterday it was bouncing lower and only hitting 82.8 at the end of long coasts. 82.8 has a nice ring to it. Sorry guys I don't play the mega miles per tank game. |

It will be interesting to see what your actuals are. So what if it's a short tank. I would say that 300 miles is long enough to prove that 80+ is sustainable. A new HCH record perhaps?

Crud, forgot the digital camera. Oh well it looks like 82.8 is gonna be it unless that one light jams me up. 82.5 for sure. I'll be adding the tank tonight.
