Hi Everyone, I just joined the SSN club too. '08 FEH 2WD with 70k miles. Happened on the freeway at ~70 MPH during a really long road trip. ICE turned off, SSN light comes on, I pulled over to the shoulder, and turned the car off. After a few minutes, restarted, and everything worked just fine. Drove another 20 minutes, same thing happens again. I restarted, drove another hour, same thing. I waited a few minutes again, restart again. Drove the rest of the way (3 hrs) to my destination without any problems. Can't find anything out of place with a visual check the next day. On my return trip, I expected it to die during the worst part of the drive...100F outside, uphill, with the AC on in stop and go traffic at 20-75 MPH. But it drove just fine, no problems until it died again when I was just cruising at 65 MPH with the AC off on flat land. When I pulled over, I was like, oh yeah, I got this handled. I turned the car off then on right away without waiting. It restarted fine, drove away fine, then SSN again in about 5 mins. This time, I waited a few minutes with the hood up. Restarted and drove 2 more hours home without any problems. So all of this SSN non-sense happened on the highway which can be pretty dangerous. I never got an SSN while parked or shifting to reverse or in a parking lot or anything like that. I drove to and from work today just fine too. Wow, this post is getting long.

So I've been reading all 279 messages in this thread! Thank you guys for documenting all of your trials and tribulations for everyone to learn from. This is what I've gathered so far. Most examples are 2007 and earlier models. Some recent posts are 2008 models which had symptoms more similar to mine than the older models.

1. Check the relays for corrosion and replace
2. Check the battery termal connector to ensure full contact
3. Check the battery for bad cells and replace
4. Reflash PCM
5. Check the MECS and replace
6. Check the High Voltage battery harness for corrosion and replace

I think I've summarized the above in order of "cheapest to costliest". Is that right guys? Today, I scanned my car with an OBDII scanner and got no codes. Later in the week, I'll go to my dealership and ask them to pull codes and report back. I checked the relays and battery termals and they're all fine. Nothing loose or corroded. I checked the MECS by putting the key in the run position and crawling under the front bumper to listen and feel for the pump. I can hear it whirring pretty consistently even if I tapped it or pulled it. I think the pump is fine.

I guess the only thing left to check is my 12V battery, the HV battery harness, and Ford's proprietary codes. Can you guys recommend anything else? Will reflashing the PCM really help in this case?

My biggest worry here is that my symptom is really hard to duplicate. Unless I drive another long trip, I probably won't see this problem again. So I can't really tell if something the dealer "fixed" really actually fixed the problem. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks a lot as always!

-mike

#1 really should be get a scanguage. Then one can provide various sensor information when something goes bad-what was the hybrid battery pack temperature when the SSN came on.

Exclamation Re: "Stop Safely Now"

Hello to all.. well i have wrote about my experience on these bad and dangerous mistake that FEH has it.. and the really bad thing is that no one from Ford Company give a reasonable answer on how to corrected.. if that happens again to me .. i will change my FEH for sure, i can't be driving a casino roulette vehicle...
I really like some straight answer here, because everyone tell a story, but we have to focus to find the real solution on these big concern.. Also we are saving some $ on gas, but when you go to a mechanic..uff you paid more that you have saved, and i doesn't make sense.

I have in my Ipad an app that is calles "DashCmd" that have many thing to check on sensor, etc.. but i can't find what is the connector i will need to my FEH '07... if any of you have an idea or comments on these app i will grateful.

All the best

H.

Just came back from the Ford dealership where they did the diagnostics. They pointed to one of the codes they pulled, P0A3E, as indication that the MECS pump should be replaced. I was told by the service advisor that the technician is a trained hybrid tech and the dealership has seen this MECS issue quite a bit. I pressed further and asked if they saw P0A81 and P0A92 (which point to the cooling fans in the HV battery pack), and they said no. So off to change out the MECS pump I guess. Thanks for everyone's input on this thread!

I had a really hard time deciding where to post this message. A search for mecs pump brought up so many threads related to this issue. I figured I'll post it here since it has been the most popular thread by far.

I would like to know if anyone has had good or bad experiences with all the MECS pumps out there. Here is a list of what I found from various sources.

1. Motorcraft (OEM?) - $254 at MotorCraft's website
2.
APDTY APDTY
- $160 at Amazon
3.
Dorman (NAPA carries these) Dorman (NAPA carries these)
- $138 at Amazon ($246 http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/CatalogItemDetail.aspx/Water-Pump-Kit-Auxiliary/_/R-NDP6005519_0390187308)

Any suggestions on which pump is better? I also checked Silver State Ford (out of stock) and Rock Auto who carries the Dorman model for $133. Thanks for the help! I'll report back after doing the replacement. One last thing...are all antifreeze the same? I read someone here used Zerex. The OEM choice is MotorCraft Gold Coolant. Is there a specific type I need to use or just about any store brand antifreeze will do?

Personally I would only use the OEM pump. Going cheap just isn't worth the possible aggravation of having to do the job over.

You don't need any antifreeze. Just capture the small amount that comes out of the hoses (less than a cup) in a pan, strain it through a clean rag and add it back to the reservoir.

Go OEM. You can find them on eBay for well under $200.

I joined the SSN club before the holidays as I started getting the message and odd noise that would correct itself after stopping and restarting. During a 400 mile trip it happened 3 times which sent me to this board for a possible fix. Thanks to all for pointing me to the MECS pump, which was easy to locate as the source of the noise. It was the old Bosch model in my 2008 that had just turned 63k miles. I thought I (my Dad actually) would try opening the motor up to see what might be causing it to bind up before ordering the new version replacement. Within the screwed on cap there was a considerable amount of "magnet dust" that I blew out. I replaced the unit and it appears to be running fine, having driven the return 400 miles plus a couple weeks of trips around here. Should the pump start to make that same binding noise I'll be sure to order the replacement, just thought the board might like to know about this "shade tree" repair.
