Default 'Poor Man's' Semi Custom Fit Navigation System

I had decided a while back to get a navigation system for my HCHII. A couple of weeks ago, I was in Costco and saw a Cobra system with a 5" screen for $570 (most systems in this price range offer only a 3" screen).

I bought one and have been playing with it - it works great. I finally found a fantastic spot for it - it fits perfectly just behind the top of the gear shift console. I put a strip of velcro on the bottom of the unit and then another strip on the top edge of the little storage area just in front of the gear shift lever. It fits perfectly and looks like it was custom designed to be installed there.

(This model has a short rear window bracket, which I left on for additional support. I don't believe you can easily install similar models with those long, window brackets the same way. There is also a big difference from a 3" to 5" screen.)

I didn't think it would work well being so low and partially covered up (for good reception), but it works great there.

If you are considering an aftermarket navigation system, you might want to consider this one.

I'm intrigued. Do you have the model number? Thanks.

Here is a link.

The model show includes 15 months of real time traffic reporting. I bought the model without.

Elliot, thanks for info. I have been considering an aftermarket Nav system for my HCHII. The costco near me isnt carrying any GPS Nav systems at this time. I went to the local circuit city and found they carry the Cobra 4000 model which appears to be similar to the Cobra 4500, however it was too small to place in the location you described. Any chance you can post a digital photo showing how it looks mounted in that location?

I'd be more interested in knowing why you were snapping photos of your GPS with the car in gear, young man. ::tapping foot::

The car was parked - I moved the shift lever down so the unit would be more visible. It would be difficult and dangerous to snap a photo while driving, don't you think! :-)

Getfeetwet.com is a good, reliable internet source for GPS. Have used them related to Motorcycles and many others have had good experience with them as well. Gpsdiscount.com is another good one.
