Default HCH2 Second Tank Dissapointing too

58.6 MPG.

https://www.greenhybrid.com/compare/.../car/1900.html

It's been very warm and dry here in Southern California.
I'm sure my MPG would have been much higher in my 2004 HCH1 CVT AT-PZEV, which is fully broken in after 37 tanks. (It's now for sale.)
I once got a 66.6 MPG tank out of that car and this time I was trying much harder than that.

I really pulled out ALL the stops this tank.
It was a LOT of trouble.

Sure 58.6 is good, but break in must be MUCH more of a factor than I anticipated.

I think I'm not going to try so hard and just wait for the thing to break in.
Plus, I got my HOV stickers and will be in the carpool lane from time to time.
If I go too much under 65 I will be shot.

Kenny it seems at 3k miles my EX has taken another step closer to breaking in. MPG has went up a tad. But the real intresting thing is when I shut the engine off for a ICE off coast now. I have to wait longer before I roll the ingnition back on or the engine will restart. Less friction in the engine now than even a week ago.

Kenny: man, 48, 55, 60 doesent matter anymore... it's what you get by spending less time... you know.. a tank is $26... an hour of my time is ~$100... so, I wont spent hours driving slow, annoying everybody just to get 2 mpg more...

my current tank will be arround 53 I assume... big deal.... its twice as good for the ecco cars...

Aw, don't be so hard on yourself. Given that you have the 2nd highest gas mileage out of 82 drivers, you must be doing something right

Still I sympathize when your new hybrid doesn't match the mileage you were getting on the old one. I really think it's only a matter of time, though.

Another way to look at the effect of break-in is to compare our database's averages for the HCH 1 and 2 with CVT.
Both averages are 45 MPG today.

I believe EPA rates the HCH2 about 3 MPG better than the HCH1.
Since all the HCH2s are new that implies that break in improves MPG by 3.

Also the HCHI has several spring and summers under it's belt, the HCHII really
only had exposure to winter climates in most of the states. We should see a big
upward swing when Spring starts hitting around the country.

PCK
Just curious.
Are you reporting the MPG numbers from your dash?
Or are you entering the gallons and miles and letting the database calculate?

Break in should help a lot. My first two tanks were 49, my most recent tank (4000 miles later) is 54.3.

I am entering the gallons and miles to database. My last tank the dash the showed 61.8
and using the above method was 61.3. Not much of a difference between the two,
my entry reflects the lower number.

Excellent job!

I ask because my car has the software bug and I can't believe the numbers I see on my dash board.

WHat is your driving conditions.
I see you are in So. Fl.
I assume it is flat there.
How long is your ususal commute?
What speed do you mostly drive at?
Do you use cruise control?
Do you ususally drive alone? (less weight)
From a stop do you accelerate very slowly?
