Default Honda civic hybrid 2003 manual transmission

Hello! This is our last desperate attempt before our car goes to the junk yard. We have a 2003 HCH, manual, that has had it's IMA battery and 12v battery replaced within the last week.

This is what it is doing... The IMA light is on, the engine light is on and the 12v battery light comes on when it is below 1200RPMs. When checking the IMA battery it is being charged, however there is NOTHING on the IMA gauges. It will not show it charging nor does it assist.

These are the codes I am getting...
P1491- Clogged EGR valve
P1435 Charge/Discharge balance problem
P1562- Motor communication sensor B circuit High input
P1600-Generic error codes-IMA system malfunction
P1639 IMA system serial communication line malfunction

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

IMA battery replaced with new? used? salvage? Refurb?

Does it "crank" start like a normal car, or does the engine start off the IMA battery?

P1600 can be ignored

P1491 likely needs EGR valve cleaning or replacement

P1435, P1562, P1639 could be broken wire, sensor, MCM or MAYBE possibly IMA battery.

You should by a service manual and check the diagnostics for each code. You can get Bishko manuals on CD for about $35 from ebay IIRC.

You could also take the car to a honda dealer and for about $140, they will tell you what is needed, and you can pursue repair on your own.

Actually, I did a little digging, P1435 has two subcodes, which are a bad hybrid battery.

You need to be 100% certain that you got a good IMA battery.

Your real issues are the IMA stuff, but the EGR is so easy to fix you might as well do it now to get it out of the way

Reading the codes, I'd almost bet your REAL issue is the communication errors, I'd bet bad communication can cause every single one of the other IMA codes, maybe when they replaced it they didn't hook up a cable...

Did you have these issues BEFORE replacing the battery?

We were having these problems before we replaced the battery. Can you give me any suggestions on how to fix the communication problems or where to start? EGR valve was an easy fix and did that yesterday.

On this page, and the next page, it shows that Terminal 1 and Terminal 21 are Communication wires. 18 and 19 are also both communication, but I doubt they're the problem

Oh 20 and 40 are also communication... I'm just gonna post the second page too

At any rate, I'd check all of those first, that's behind the cover for the battery, which requires removing the rear seats and removing 10 Torx...30(?) bolts not a very hard task, just don't die...

(actually those instructions are for my 06, might be different for yours, but the wiring diagram is the same I think, except for 4 wires that don't have anything to do with you)

Good idea to confirm your tap voltages are consistent:
