16 year old hits 101 mpg
My son Justin and I have just returned from a 394 mile trip to La Crosse, WI. in our 2000 5 speed Insight. He has only had his license for 3 months and this was to be his second stint at driving long distance. We had agreed to drive for milaege on our trip. I would drive the first leg to La Crosse and he the return trip to Pewaukee. We planned on secondary highways and a litte interstate driving.
Weather was dry, winds light. On my leg I achieved a 97.7 mpg. That was my best and our best for any trip to date. I was amazed that we were so close to 100mpg that I may have been able to tweak it a little more. We talked, and Justin said he would do his best.
Weather was again great, fair tail winds. About half way home he was already in the mid 90's so he pressed it. About 30 miles from home he did it. He hit 100mpg. Then he hit 101mpg. He ended up with a total mpg for his return leg of 99.6 mpg. Total round-trip mpg was 98.54.
Now I gotta tell you, that I've been driving the Insight for about 2 years and I have improved through my driving experiences. I've gone from the high 60's to the mid 80's on a regular basis. But for my son who has been driving for a little over 3 months to be hitting the mid to high 90's is impressive. I'll take some credit for being a good teacher but I think there's more to it. He may be a natural.
Watch out Wayne, he's an up and comer

Hi Bradlee:
___Give Justin my congratulations as I knew he had a great shot at hitting that goal … Wait until you let him out on his own and boom! He will be pumping out 105 + mpg tanks regularly
___As a bit of an incentive, there are only 3 guys in the country that have taken (2) hybrid’s of different types to > 105 mpg. You have the car(s), the technology, and he has the technique(s) nailed down … Tell him he could be the fourth and at the ripe old age of 16 years old Wow!
___Good Luck

a natural...and the fact that he hasn't had much time to build up bad habits- he emulates what he sees. Thus his driving is sort of a blank slate which you seem to have a large influence upon. Lucky. Now here's to hoping he drives as well when you are NOT in the car with him!

Re: 16 year old hits 101 mpg
It's a fantastic number to be sure. More amazing is the fact that he broke that 100 MPG mark with 2 people in the car. I may be wrong but that's a first as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for the support. In addition, me, the second person in the car weigh 250 lbs and we had about 25 lbs of travelling things too.
