I guess the topic should be "Forsaking fuel consumption for tank data ! "

Speaking of conserving gas I'm wondering if it's only the game for me.

For example this afternoon on my daily ride:
I was running SERIOUSLY late.
HCH was almost out of fuel and stopping would only further delay.
I'd be FORCED to do the freeway at 80-85MPH, seriously trashing my tank data.

So what do I do?
I jump in the Grand Caravan and lock it in at 75MPH to make it in on time.
I've likely burned +4x the fuel over my HCH but haven't hurt my tank data.

Am I loosing it?

Hi Hot_Georgia_2004:

___You’re not nuts at all, just honest. I have been known to take the Corolla to the library and back (2X now!) to save the Insight’s segment and tank mileage as well!

___Then again, look at those of us pushing our Hybrid’s fuel economy envelope. I think Krousdb spoke of driving around in his underwear instead of turning on the A/C! God if you only knew how I leave the drives parking lot in the morning. It starts out with a fast push and I jump into the driver’s seat (the drive is just flat enough on top to keep the car from coasting down on its own). I am usually at 2 to 3 mph by the time I jump in. After reaching 12 mph at the bottom of the drive while starting the turn onto the road, I start her up via the IMA and scoot off in second gear. When I do this with the Corolla, I almost get a hernia given it actually weighs something ;) Fortunately, it’s usually about 04:45 AM and the neighbors aren’t awake yet to watch that spectacle … A few more months of this and I will be ready for a spot on the Olympic bobsled team :D

___Good Luck

xcel that's pretty good.
Wonder if you have a Miss Cravetz neighbor?

When I leave home it's a nearly constant battle up hill.
Several thousand feet over 10 miles broken up by large hills.
I focus the FCD on 60 or 64 most the 10 miles.
By then I average around 55MPG over the distance.

BUT.......
On my way home around 3:00AM I take advatage of this.
On certain 1-3 mile streches of this road I can switch the engine off
and boot the IMA back up and coast.

My trip is already ~35 miles out so my FCD moves slowly.
This way I can gain 3-4 MPG.
A couple of hills I peak briefly going only about 25-30MPH.
Wish Honda would have included fold out pedals! :D

Near my house is the local speed traps. Limit is 35MPH.
You should see the look on the cops face at 3:00AM as I come
rolling by him without a motor running.
Sometimes I wonder if he's going to pull me over just to check?

Folks you may not want to do this with your CVT.
I only restart below 40MPH. Above this speed gives a strong JERK
to the CVT even in neutral.

Thanks
Steve

yup...and the sad thing about that steve....its illegal! i've done it some too, i have a mile section that if i hit it just right i can coast on home....but its the local speed trap and it requires some 15 over coasting so i've stopped, its not worth a ticket.

If I were you I'd be a bit more concerned about safety.

Stevo12886 05-25-2004 07:57 PM

saftey...lol. yah, im going 15 over if i do it...but its about the average speed people truck along on the road.

Hot_Georgia_2004 05-25-2004 08:07 PM

If I loose control of my car by coasting going 30-35MPH at 3:00AM then I'd better park it!
