Default HCCI means cleaner, more efficient hybrids and diesels

I don't know too much about this HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, a cool combustion process) but it looks promising for future engines.

Wisconsin’s Najt works with GM’s J. Gary Smyth at the Powertrain Systems Research Lab in Warren. Engineers build test engines using quartz crystal “glass” cylinders and piston heads so they can photograph and observe combustion processes directly. HCCI is so clean that a diesel can run three continuous hours without needing to clean the clear cylinder walls.
