put the car on "Park" or in "Neutral" before turning off the car?
Hello, this question is more for the Hypermilers. When you get to a destination, and the engine shut off due to the auto idle stop function, the car will "restart" if you shift it into park (P), but if you "turn it off" in neutral (N) and then shift it into park (P), the engine will remain off and you will save a little bit of gas by avoiding the engine restart.
My question now is, is this practice safe for the transmission or can this cause any long term damage to any parts of the car? Thanks. |

As far as I know, you should be fine shifting to N if your car has auto-stopped at your final destination, then turning off the key and shifting into P. Since your foot is already on the brake during this procedure, I don't think it harms the transmission.

My 06 will not auto stop in N. H
