2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
 
Our new to us 2010 FEH is suffering from a no start/no crank issue with the "Stop Safely Now " and red triangle. I have reviewed many previous posts but very few address problems associated with the later generation model years 2009-12 and few still mention the DTC's that we have coming up on the Forscan software. What I can summarize so far is as follows>
1. No crank/no start
2. SSN message
3. Red triangle
4. Info display below gauges indicate battery system is OK
5 Mileage reading is ~117,000km or about 70,000 miles. One owner, no listed accidents. Traded into an FCA dealer and sold to us.
6. All OBDII emission monitors were green when we picked up the vehicle and no emission DTC were showing or pending.
7. Using Forscan, DTC's showing
P0AFA-16-28 Hybrid Battery System Voltage below Threshold
P0562-00-28 System voltage low,
P2806-FF PCM Transmission Range Sensor (maybe set when we pushed the truck into the garage?)
P1000-00-28 set probably due to the fact the engine has not gone through OBDII emission tests due to no start?
8. Recharged 12v battery and no chante
9. Swapped in 2 good known batteries -no change
10 Cleaned grounds under 12v battery tray - no change
11 Cleaned throttle body - no change
12 Checked and reset some fuses relating to the PCM, TBCM, TCM, fuel pump
13 Swapped defroster and PCM relays
14 coolant levels in resevoirs normal. Engine oil level normal.
15 12V battery fully charged and tried 10A boost when starting
16 tried resetting both inertia switches but they had not popped in my opinion
17 Forscan showed VPACK, Volt = 319.8, AVG SOC 45.98, BATPAC STAT= Pack OK, BSOC 45%,HEVVEHSTAT = Normal, Min SOC% 43.98%
18 FLI 94.51% FP-F= No Fault FP = off
19 ACC CMD = off, ACDFSB = No, ACP PRESS kPa =384, ACP V Volt = 0.95 ACRDV_F = No Fault , ACCM_CHVS Volt = 2.00 (seems like a problem s/b 320V?) AC CIC Amper = 0.80, Main ECUV , Volt = 63.75 (maybe too low?)
20 Headlights and tail lights, interior lights and dashboard controls all seem normal.
Vehicle was driving normally then did not move in EV mode or startup ICE three times after stopping on three separate occasions. Did restart after moving key to OFF and then START again. Finally refused to start/crank in our driveway.
Unfortunately a 2010 does not have the 12V boost button as the previous gen had. Mechanic looking at it says HV battery voltage is low - 26% SOC and needs to be charged.
it appears as if the HV sensor at the ACCM Compressor? is reading very low voltage. Moves from over 100 and ticks down to zero over a few minutes.So
A diagnostic flow chart may indicate that either the ACCM compressor, the main wiring harness from the HV battery or both are defective/damaged. The mechanic said main HV fuse is OK.May ground issue. HV battery pack?
21 No open recalls. This is a Canadian unit now operating in Ontario.

This is a tough one.

26% SoC is NOT below the start threshold. HV battery should start the ICE at this level.

319V is completely fine and a normal resting voltage for a battery that has sat for several days.

There's another value that represents the difference between the highest and lowest HV battery block voltages. See if you can find it or just tell us everything in the BCM output.

Check all fuses?

12V pass load test?

Replace 12V ground cable?

Fusion uses Lithium.

The value in the FEH with the NiMH cells is typically less than 0.2V. For an imbalanced battery at low SoC, this can be higher.

No, 2013+ Fusions use Lithium but 2010-2012 Fusions use NiMH just like Escape, Fusion Hybrids do use a different battery module arrangement. So a typical 2010 Fusion Hybrid battery will be around 280 Volts.

Thanks. I completely missed that you indicated 2010.

The Fusion monitors every 8 cells vs. every 10 for the FEH, so that number will be a little lower for the fusion. .05V is very low, so that battery is in really good shape.

If that's the resting voltage, it doesn't mean much diagnostically when there are other issues. Even under high assist/regen, that number should likely be under 0.2V. If you see that number swing substantially with assist/regen, then that's indicative of weak cells/imbalance.

Yes, i tried to clear the codes several times with Forscan to no avail. Same codes pop back immediately. Unless I was looking at it wrong or confused, the ACCM_CHVS, Volt was originally at about 320. When I tested it again several times, it was declining each time to lower values. I think the last PID showed it either at 2 or zero.
