One of the first things I did with my "new" 2005 was plug in some 120v Xmas Lights.
So I'm with You!
I actually got a laugh at the Hybrid Experience in Dearborn when I mentioned this to the engineers who built it.

Do you need the optional 110 outlet to plug in some Christmas bulbs?

You can buy an inexpensive inverter at at place like Target for $15 that will run Xmas lights.

Well it started out with the wife saying go with me to buy 1 thing for the tree. Walking thru the store for an hour I saw battery powered lights, jokingly I said Lets get those for Li'l blue. She said OK.. then we both went Duh we have an outlet in the car! lets see what other lights there are and cheaper. Saw these LED lights, rated at only like 3.2W! outdoor lights, so that's what we got, and strung around the luggage rack.

But, no you wouldn't need the 110v Outlet option, AC inverters are pretty cheap.
