Unhappy Power steering broken at 900 miles

Hello,

I have a 2006 Escape Hybrid 2wd and it has 900 miles on it. The power steering went out and it is now at the dealer to be repaired.

Is this a common problem?

And I am getting about 30 mpg in mixed driving. Does this improve over time? I drive pretty dang slow too.

Thanks.

Not sure how common the steering issue is. I have seen it posted as a problem here by a couple of people. Always remember though..... thousands of people with no problem would never bother to post. Only the ones that have a problem will so it always looks "common" on the internet when it probably isn't.

That being said, having your steering go out at 900miles sucks. Hopefully you'll have no more problems with it. Mines at 5100 and no problems yet (cross your fingers).

Mines a 4WD and I get 30-31. As you learn to drive a bit differently and the car breaks in it will get better. My first tank or two got me about 26. The common point for the 2WD seems to be around 30-34 from that chart that pops up on the "home" page. However if you want to be a "nut" like gpsman1 you can do alot better than that (requires a different driving style, and higher pressure in the tires, etc... read his posts, and others to learn how to do that...

If you are listening 'gpsman1'.... just teasing. I'm not willing to put as much effort into it as you are... but I've picked up a couple of your tricks that I use.

Cool Re: Power steering broken at 900 miles

hi~
when i got my2wd FEH in june of 05, they told me that it should take about 10k to break in both engins. I now have 18k and get anywhere from 32-34 somtimes more. i have found the longer i drive it the better it gets. hope this helps

Well I got the car back today and they said there was some kind of plug not fully clipped in at the factory when first assembled and some module had to be replaced. Now the power steering works fine. Glad to have the car back.

I had an 05 Escape (non-hybrid) for a loaner and that thing really sucked the gas down. It probably got 18 mpg, but when you're used to 30+ you really notice the drain.

I love my hybrid!!!
