From the workshop manual removal and installation is just two steps:

1. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner ccw and remove the accessory drive belt.

2. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

I assume thats the tensioner at the top?
How is it rotated? Wrench at the center nut?
thanks to both of you for the help.

Not sure, but looks like it from the diagram.

I haven't changed out a serpentine belt on the FEH, but if it's like my Blazer, just take the biggest crescent wrench you have to the center nut of the tensioner, and rotate to relieve tension. The belt pretty much just drops off the pulleys. It's a very easy job. Save the old belt for a spare.

Rotating the tensioner is to detension the belt. Usually a socket wench over a nut in the center of the roller will work.

Good info here, I just changed my belt last night.

You do not need to lift the car and remove the lower panel the three forward pulleys are relatively simple to reach and thread, the rear can be easily reached around the lower shroud. I was surprised, I snuck my hand up under the shroud and there was the pully.

the tensioner is a *****, getting the old belt off is simple, 11/16ths socket turned counter-clockwise. to put the new belt on is difficult as you have to move the tensioner from it's fully open position to a spot where it can accept the new belt, so you have to move it from say 2 o'clock to 11 o'clock, this involves kind of muscle-ing the rachet handle past the coolant resevoirs. it is possible to push using both hands, then you can hold it in place with fingers of one hand while popping the belt on.

took me probably 40 minutes to get it all figured out, if I had to do it again I could do it in ten minutes max.
