No good news yet... I will be installing a data recorder soon.

I drove the car for about 1500 miles without incident, but then it lost engine power again 3 times on Jan 29 and 3 more times on Jan 30 -- without warning and restarted immediately each time.

Here are the NHTSA complaints I found two weeks ago:

ODI Numbers for Escape Hybrid:
10348540, 10360029, 10349760, 10326667, 10361122, 10329839, 10352951, 10376463, 10319247, 10351287, 10375585, 10355792, 10365841, 10353329, 10279505, 10328795, 10340467, 10356905, 10124042, 10284256, 10154170

ODI Numbers for Mariner Hybrid:
10353411, 10335380, 10334815, 10330798, 10374725, 10349490, 10342552, 10329183

Enter up to 25 of these at a time at the website below to see details

Interestingly, last month Toyota has recalled the Prius to replace the electric water pump. The explanation they give is bogus. The reality is that they take out the old brushed motor design and replace it with a more reliable brushless pump (a la going from the original brushed Bosch pump to the Cooper Standard brushless 5M6Z8C419A in the Escape/Mariner hybrids). Unlike Ford, they are replacing it at NO expense to the car owners.

After reading this thread I thought I would still post here because my situation seems a little different.

I have a 2007 Ford Escape hybrid with 48900 miles.
Went on a road trip and got about 30 miles away from my almost 400 mile destination and received the Stop Safely Now. Stopped the vehicle and restarted a few times and made it to our destination. It sat overnight and the rest of the time at my destination I had no problems. I changed the air filter for the battery cooling system and headed back home. 300 miles into my return trip I again received the Stop Safely Now. I would stop for a while restart the vehicle and would make it for a little while and get the Stop Safely Now again.
It seemed when I put the rear windows down and air was flowing through the car that I would not get the stop safely now. Coincidental?

As a side note Ford bought back our 2005 FEH because they couldnt fix it with the same Stop Safely Now error. I feel like and idiot.

You have the best man (CarlD) to help you check for codes there is so follow his lead on Cleanmpg.

Hello and thank you everyone for all the info.

I have a 2008 FEH, which also recently started to shut down on me when driving faster than 60 mph. My car has around 52k miles.
I know from the prior posts, there is a TSB for the 2007 FEH models. But does the same TSB apply to later models, like the 2008?
Im reluctant to take my car to the local dealership because Ive had bad service there in the past so Im going to order the MECS pump and try to replace it myself.
But I was wondering if I should also replace the relays? Most of the info I found on the relays pertained to the 2007 models.

I would appreciate any suggestions for my 2008 model.
Thanks
iliana

Hi everybody!

iliana!
I have exactly the same problem as you! My 2008 FEH has around 60k miles.
I got the "Stop Safely Now" message 2 times on the way home from a party. I stopped and after that the engine restarted without any problem. I lowered the speed to ~50mph and I could get to the destination. I read out the trouble codes with ScanXL and got
DTC Description ECU
P0A3E Generator Inverter Over Temperature $7E9
B1318 Battery Voltage Low $73F
Later, after reading this thread I checked the MECS pump. With engine OFF and the key in RUN position I notice the bulbs and I hear the pumps working continously.

If anybody can help me what this DTC-s means I would really appreciate.
thanks,
lorincziz

Well, we have been struck by the "Stop Safely Now!" failure. Thursday night, my wife and I had been driving at 70 MPH on the expressway for about 20 minutes when the warning came on. She pulled over to the side of the road and we turned off the car for about 5 minutes. We then started the car up and got up to 70 MPH. After another five minutes of driving at 70 MPH, the "Stop Safely Now!" light came on again and the car started to lose power. My wife successfully pulled the car over to the side of the road and stopped the car. The odometer had the ominous reading of 100,666. This time we sat for 15 minutes. She then drove 25 miles home on back roads.

The next day, we took the car to our Ford dealership at 7 AM. The electronic analysis printout read: "CKD THE EECV SYSTEM N KOEO PASS Y KOEOC P1A0D P0A3E PERFORMED PINPOINT TEST AND TRACED A WEAK MOTOR ELECTRONICS COOLANT PUMP."

I spoke to the mechanic at noon who told me that he had gotten a second FEH with the same problem a couple hours after mine but he only had one Motor Electronics Coolant Pump in stock and since I was first, he installed it in my FEH. I talked to him about this thread. He said that he has seen this problem frequently with the FEH and that he had seen both pump failures and corrosion failures.

I asked the service manager if this would have been a warranty repair if I had not just hit 100K. He went through his warranty printout sheets and also ran my repair with 98,000 miles as the car mileage and showed me that it was not covered. He noted that the 100,000 mile warranty stated it covered the hybrid system but somehow excluded this pump which he pointed out only is on the FEH. Go figure.

How much did the repair cost for parts and labor?
