Running your hybrid cleaner. Or dirtier.
SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- City officials are hoping to harness the power of dog waste in this dog-friendly city where animal feces make up nearly 4 percent of residential waste. The droppings will be tossed into a contraption called a methane digester, which is basically a tank in which bacteria feed on feces for weeks to create methane gas. The methane could then be piped directly to a gas stove, heater, turbine or anything else powered by natural gas. It can also be used to generate electricity.
What a thought: a PHEV powered by Fido.

Actually in Zurich, Switzerland, they have a similar system in operation at the airport.
Ok, not dog poo, but in the airport area all compostable waste is collected and fermented to produce methane. The plant provides heat directly to teh area buildings, including airport and adjacent hotels, and produces methane which is used to power airport hotel shuttles. A very cool setup that has been in operation for teh past 5 years at least.
