Default The Tragedy of GM

Would that be Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello or King Lear?

Hamlet. Definitely Hamlet

Alas, poor GM! I knew him, GreenHybrid: an auto company
of infinite jest, of most excellent fancy: GM hath
borne me on his driver's seat a thousand times; and now, how
abhorred in my imagination it is! my gorge rims at
it. Here hung those giant gas-guzzling V8's that I have driven I know
not how oft. Where be your hybrids now? your
quality? your reliability? your flashes of merriment,
that were wont to set the table on a roar? Not one
now, to mock your own grinning? quite chap-fallen?
Now get you to my shareholder's chamber, and tell her, let
her paint an inch thick, to this favour she must
come; make her laugh at that.

Excellent article.

Not the same picture as the Super Bowl commercials

Nice Hamlet analogy, Sledge. Here's mine (from the same scene):

HAMLET: What man dost thou dig it (this grave) for?
1ST CLOWN: For no man, sir.
HAMLET: What woman, then?
1ST CLOWN: For none, neither.
HAMLET: Who is to be buried in't?
1ST CLOWN: One that was a big car manufacturer, sir; but, rest its soul, it's dead.

We can extend this beyond Shakespeare. How about Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Free market: Bring out your dead!
Consumers: Here's one.
Free market: Ninepence.
GM: I'm not dead!
Free market: What?
Consumers: Nothing. Here's your ninepence.
GM: I'm not dead!
Free market: 'Ere. He says he's not dead!
Consumers: Yes he is.
GM: I'm not!
Free market: He isn't?
Consumers: Well, he will be soon. He's very ill.
GM: I'm getting better!
Consumers: No you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.
Free market: Oh, I can't take him like that. It's against regulations.
GM: I don't want to go on the cart!
Consumers: Oh, don't be such a baby.
Free market: I can't take him.
GM: I feel fine!
Consumers: Well, do us a favor.
Free market: I can't.
Consumers: Well, can you hang around a couple of minutes? He won't be long.
Free market: No, I've got to go to Ford.
Consumers: Well, when's your next round?
Free market: Thursday.
GM: I think I'll go for a walk.
Consumers: You're not fooling anyone you know. Look, isn't there something you can do?
GM: [singing] I feel happy... I feel happy. [whop]
Consumers: Ah, thanks very much.
Free market: Not at all. See you on Thursday.

I've always considered GM more as a "Comedy of Errors" than a tragedy. Tragedy usually implies that there's a a force beyond our control involved like a hurricane or a unforseen death. GM's woes could have all been avoided. I see that company like a VW Beetle in the circus that pulls up and 26 clowns come piling out - except that the Beetle is an Aveo, and the clowns are corporate executives.

I have a much simpler Holy Grail version:

WAGONER: I'm invincible!!
MARKETPLACE: You're a loony!

Maybe Michael Moore could go back to documentaries on GM (Roger and Me)

I actually agree with him (which is seldom) that everyone at GM shares the blame.
