OBD2...worth getting?

OBD2...worth getting?
One of my other cars (Ford Escort) has the check engine light pop on occassionally. Since it's a PITA to get the car to my local garage, I'm thinking about getting an OBD2 (on board diagnostics) reader.
I am not a mechanic and don't plan on doing any under the hood repairs (other than refilling the washer fluid reservoir), but thought it convenient to know what the problem is.
Does anyone have one? Is it easy to use (for a novice)? Are the codes easily decipherable (is the info on the web)? There is a wide price range, do the $35 ones do the same as the $300 ones?
Thanks!

I've got a "Scangauge" which is certainly handy to have around. In addition to being a code reader the Scangauge can also display 4 gauge functions of your choice (programmable). I can not speak for other code readers.
The Scangauge is easy to use, the codes are easily decipherable and there is info on the web.

The ScanGauge II can display up to 4 of 12 possible gauges at one time. The units of measure can be changed and the rate of update can be increased or decreased.
