Default Power Steering Noise

My '08 (only 12K miles) has had some noise associated with the power steering which started this past winter. I plan to take it in to the dealer eventually, but was wondering if anyone else had noticed or heard of this issue?

Essentially, if you are stopped or driving slowly and rotate the wheel from end to end, I hear a click or minor clunk sort of sound 2-3 times as it passes around the middle of the range of travel. Sorry that description stinks so bad.. I'm not sure how to describe other than to say that it's a minor mechanical sort of sound (not a whine or anything), and seems to be more on the driver's side than the passenger's.

The power assist has not dropped out at all.. ever. I expect this is most likely a mechanical thing (kingpin, ball joint, upper strut bushing, etc.), but I suppose it could be the rack itself too.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has had these symptoms.

Thanks,

Rob

Just so you know, your HCH2 has electric steering! Hal

I realize that. But an electric power steering system also has a mechanical rack.

I haven't really payed attention, but can't recall hearing anything associated with turning the wheel, on our '06. I'd say get it checked out. Might also be cv joint.

Fast forward 15 months... I'm now at 32K miles, so I finally have to deal with this problem. I took it in last week and they lubed the upper strut bushing on one side. It's now doing it louder than ever, so it's back in the dealer today. I think it's worse as the weather gets colder.

My dealer just called. They're replacing both front strut assemblies.

Well, I picked it up with the new front struts today. The noise is completely gone. More impressive, the handling is amazingly improved. It just seems like it's cornering much flatter and tighter. I would never have believed that the struts could degrade so much over 31K miles, but it's true.

It's also possible that they did a realignment and added some toe-in. I'll have to see if my mileage drops off accordingly. But in terms of handling, I'm thrilled at the improvement.
