Default Hybrids gather dust at AutoNation dealerships

From MarketWatch.com, a sister site to the WSJ:

Hybrids gather dust at AutoNation dealerships.

The comments are interesting to read.

And now even Toyota is looking for a bailout in Japan.

Here is the more extended version of the conversation between AutoNation and WSJ.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1236...oo_hs&ru=yahoo

Lots of good points

You have 5% of the marketplace is committed to social responsibility
...
You tell me the price of gasoline and I will totally tell you what people will buy and what trade-offs they will make
...
I think it is fair to say that in Washington a markedly higher gas tax is seen as political suicide
...
If you want to sell a $4 gas tax, we are going to have to have a campaign to say, here's why.
I agree with most points except the last. The large number of non-taxpaying voters will see this as nothing but a tax on the poor. No different than raising taxes on groceries. But it would help AN self off those fuel efficient cars that are collecting dust.

Too bad the against-taxes crowd has been so effective. Right now, if the gas goes to 4.00/g, that money goes to some corp. With a higher tax on gas you get at least 2 outcomes, 1) tamping down consumption, and 2) the money collected can be used to do things for the nation, for example, rebuild roads and bridges. Again, too bad we've become a nation of self centered, self-interested people.
