Question First OIL CHANGE Milage JUMP!

Anyone else notice a vast improvement after your first oil change????

I ran the last tank with NO CRUISE, Close to posted speed limit and got 33.5 MPG at 447.7 w/ 13.365 gallons of fuel. Tank prior was 27.5 MPG Changed oil at about 4,000 miles. Onstar said I had 75% oil life, but with the initial break in I decided to not wait any longer.

Opinions??????

My first oil change will be coming up as soon as I can get someone to do it. (I was injured at a fire call and can't do it myself) I will be using Mobile 1 so we will see what happens.

As a side note, my wife has taken over as primary driver since my accident, and her driving style does hurt the mileage a bit. She does not use cruise control and has a hard time keeping a steady speed. Still, I expect mileage to be at about 30 for this tank.

Red face Re: First OIL CHANGE Milage JUMP!

Considering that I am currently at 12,750 miles & counting..... and I have changed my oil twice - here are my results.

1st Oil Change was at 5500 miles
Tank Prior - 30.35mpg
Tank After - 34.16mpg 3.81mpg increase

2nd Oil Change was at 11900 miles
Tank Prior - 31.37mpg
Tank After - 34.90mpg 3.53mpg increase

Conclusions - statistically it is too early to tell but the first tank after an oil change looks to yield better gas mileage. Less friction with the oil. We should all keep an eye on this. (My driving habits were the same for the priors / the afters & temps were even.)

One may say that getting more frequent oil changes would give better gas mileage. Perhaps. Jiffy Lube wants you to change every 3000 miles which in my case would be every 6 weeks.

However, changing your oil prior to its useful life in my view is wasteful. Getting better gas mileage is great but not at the expense of changing your oil more frequently. The greater goal is still the environment and saving money. (You can pick the order.)

To firenurse - hope you recover from the injury soon - I was expecting you to pass me on your next fillup or two - you were coming on strong.

I'm wondering if using a SYNTHETIC would sustain the milage bump? I am on my first change. Perhaps I will switch at next change and see. Opinions???

A change in oil, even to synthetic, will not net a noticeable increase in mileage per gallon used. Especially by way of the increases listed here.

As I wrote - "statistically it is too early to tell."

However, if we gather more data points - we might all be surprised by the results.

Just did our first oil change (Mobil 1) at 4200 miles. It's a breeze with that top-mounted oil filter replacement! Curious to see the results, but they will probably be statistically misleading as we are entering summer blend gas season, temps are rising, and I just bumped up the tire pressure a little.

FYI--one of the advantages of the GM BAS system is obviously its simplicity. Some wouldn't consider doing simple stuff like oil changes themselves on a hybrid, but this one is as easy as the conventional version. It's literally a 10 minute, mess-free job. If you do it yourself, hop over to Pepboys or some other cheapo auto parts store and pick up a 32 mm low-profile socket for the oil filter housing. It's a common part since all Ecotec engines use it, and it makes the job a cinch.
