anyone need a replacement 12 volt battery yet?

Just curious if anyone's needed a replacement 12 volt yet, esp. early 07 buyers?

For those who haven't had other Toyota HSD based hybrids, the 12 volt doesn't start the engine since there's no starter motor (nor an alternator). On HSD hybrids, the DC to DC converter inside the inverter powers the 12 volt bus when the car's in READY mode.

On Priuses, when the 12 volt gets low, weird stuff happens. There will NEVER be the symptoms of slow cranking nor the starter not turning over since again, there's no dedicated starter motor and the ICE is started by one of the MGs inside the power split device (and via the big HV battery).

The car may be unable to start when the 12 volt's low, due to the weird stuff happening.

Whenever I get a chance and am over at my parents' house, I should measure the voltage on my 12 volt on my mom's 07 NAH after the car has sat overnight. (It was a leftover 07 bought in early 08.)

http://priuschat.com/threads/why-doe...teries.106359/ has some discussion of why there's a 12 volt and a HV battery.

Re: anyone need a replacement 12 volt battery yet?

As a matter of fact, we just had to replace the 12 volt in our 2007 NAH that we purchased on May 26, 2007.

We discovered the need to do this in a weird situation. My wife had gone to the airport to pick up some passengers. After a 20 mile drive, she parked in the cell phone lot and turned the car off. When she tried to start the car it wold not start. She called AAA and they were able to jump start the car and informed her that the battery needed to be replaced. She was able to drive the car home without incident. I put it on a charger until I could go purchase a new battery and get it installed.

BTW as of the last tank the car has performed as follows:
82,195 miles
32.5 mpg measured

Cool. Thanks!

Any idea what voltage the battery would read at after the car sat overnight?

On Gen 2 (04 to 09) Priuses w/their tiny AGM battery (pics at http://priuschat.com/threads/toyota-...3#post-1762412 and http://priuschat.com/threads/new-12v.../#post-1314434), they typically only last 4-6 years or so, despite them being in the hatch area in the rear and not being exposed to high under the hood temps.

My mom's 07 NAH (bought new in early 08), I don't think even has 30K miles on it.

I changed my batter at Sam's Club. They got some decent AGM batteries in their stores. If you cannot find the model, you can order it online and they will notify when is arrive.

Usually, the battery price is somewhere around $100-$150.

I didn't measure the voltage.

I should note that we leave phone charger plugged into the receptacle inside the center compartment. That is receptacle is live 24/7 so there is always a slight drain on the 12v battery on our NAH.

Does anyone have the Optima part/model # for the replacement 12 volt or does the dealer order another Panasonic?

TSB NTB08-044a has one replace the Panasonic 12 volt with Optima Battery part # 999M1-NB34C. I don't see Altima Hybrid as a choice at http://www.optimabatteries.com/us/en/. I'm not sure the the non-hybrid 2.5L 12 volt is the right one.

(As I mentioned, Priuses uses a goofy AGM 12 volt instead of a flooded lead-acid battery. It's also in the back and it also has a vent tube connection.)

The model # is D35

either
8020-164 35 for redtop
or
8040-214-d35 for yelltop

I took a look at the car today and it was built sometime in July 07.

Voltage seemed fine at 12.41 volts at rest (still attached to the car). It still remained above 12 volts with a load in ON mode (intentionally not in READY mode).

I wanted to remove the right side finisher to charge the battery anyway (w/my Tecmate Optimate 4, which intentionally charges very slowly. I use it on my Prius' tiny 12 volt.) The attached TSB says:

Do not attempt to charge or test the Altima Hybrid 12-volt battery through the RH inner trunk access panel. The RH trunk side finisher MUST BE REMOVED prior to charging / testing.
I'm not sure why but I'm guessing they're afraid of a spark causing a fire.

I was easily able to remove the 3 small clips w/a flathead screwdriver (gently prying up the center part) as I've dealt w/these exact clips before on another car. I couldn't get the cargo net hook off. I pried the middle part out (and might've broken a bit of the "teeth" off) but couldn't remove the hook. Are you just supposed to pull or pry hard after that?

I stumbled across http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/alt...t-removal.html (a guy a/an Altima non-hybrid coupe) w/identical looking hook.

The TSB is of no real help as it says "Remove the RH trunk side finisher." I couldn't find anything in the service manual about the hook.

Long story short, I had to stop work.
