Changing the oil is cheap insurance.

 

Back from "The Great Western Motor Tour" last week. Getting ready to change to oil (myself) for the second time. There is 4083 miles on the Odometer w/ 3736.4 miles for the trip and the Oil Life Indicator is at 73%. After this oil change am probably going to change it with the DIC or once a year (don't normally drive much) which ever comes first.

 

I am getting my first oil change since I've owned the 2009 Camry Hybrid. Just at 8,000 miles and the first owner changed oil at 3,000 miles.

The dealer routinely uses 5-20W non synthetic. When I asked about synthetic they started on a bunch of stuff about oil in a barrel and not sure about it so I said I'd bring my own and they took about $20 off for the oil.

I discovered that in the San Jose, CA area (Campbell, CA) Autozone has Mobile 1 0-20W synthetic for $7.99...

BUT there is a sale. Buy 5 quarts, add a Mobile 1 filter. Get the filter free (Shelf tag says $12.99) and the oil came to $6.40 a quart before the exorbitant 9.5% tax.

They said the sale was on for another 10 days or so and you can buy a maximum of 10 quarts at a time, once a day and get that if I read the shelf tag correctly. I'll save the filter for when I do my own oil changes.

If you use Mobile 1 and do your own oil changes, you might want to stock up!!!

 

they had Mobil 1 on sale at WallyWorld here in Wisconsin for 23.50 for a 5 qt jug, mid to late sept. I bought three.

 

No question here Oil is the life blood of our engines, lets not forget about the other fluids as well Transmission etc.

 

Surely, changing oil is definitely a cheap insurance. But for the past decades there's a lot of controversy about exactly when engine oil gets old and how often it should be replaced with new oil. Because there are many factors at work — how you drive, the condition and age of the engine, the external environment you drive in, and stop-and-go versus highway driving — it's an inexact science. Owner's manual recommendations for oil and filter changes vary from 3,000 to 10,000 miles.
